special Heereskavallerie part 1

#377

Post by Bernd R » 09 Mar 2007, 18:20

Special : Heeres – Kavallerie
- history in the 1930s , period of rebirth in 1942-45

In the context of this thread this special’s main focus is on awardholders / units.

I would like to provide some further aspects and info on this cavalry topic in addition.
Therefore this essay will give a short overview on the development of cavalry units in the 1930s and WW2 and hopefully is useful as a start for interested people.

Preface :
The 20th century was the time of the last „Horrido!“ of the German Cavalry.
Nowadays the tradition of this branch is carried on by the Panzeraufklärungstruppe of the
Federal Republic of Germany’s Bundeswehr, which took over the golden yellow branch-of-service-color.
Reaching it’s height in the Kaiserliche Alte Armee with an amount of 110 cavalry regiments, proud regiments of Kürassiere, Dragoner, Ulanen, Husaren, Jäger zu Pferde and Cheveaulegers (bavaria) with wonderful coloured uniforms, already in WW1 it turned out as a fact, that the cavalry in it’s original form of “Schlachten-Kavallerie” was at an end point of it’s history.
The modern warfare with machine-guns and improved and effective artillery weapons wasn’t a field for the “Schlachten-Kavallerie” of the 17th-19th century, keeping formation and riding direct attacks. WW1 ended in furious fighting in the trenches, reaching the extreme at Verdun.
For recon and support purposes in form of a “Truppenkavallerie” the cavalry in WW1 was still useful and survived the war in that function. Nevertheless 1917/18 a great number of riders had to dismount to form three Kavallerie-Schützen-Divisionen for infantry combat.

The history of the German Cavalry in 1919 – 1945 can be divided into three major periods :
1. 1919 – 1934/35
2. 1935 – 1942/43
3. 1942/43 – 1945

1. 1919 –1934/35 : post WW1, Weimarer Republik, restrictions of the Versailles Treaty

The Versailles Treaty didn’t allow Germany tanks and other heavy weapons.
Consequence of this restriction was the excessive formation of cavalry units.
The Reichswehr had 18 Reiter-Regimenter with 97 Eskadrons.
They were organized within 3 Kavallerie-Divisionen.
The conception was having a “Schnelle Feuerwaffe” (main combat troops).
The training was mainly to keep formation and to ride a direct attack.

2. 1935 – 1942/43 :

october 1934 reorganizing and re-arming of Reichswehr is beginning
16.03.1935 : “Gesetz zum Aufbau der Wehrmacht”

transfer of troops to the new motorized forces, first called „Kraftfahrkampftruppen“,
later called „Panzertruppen“ :

Reiter-Regiment 4 -> Panzer-Regiment 6 (may 1935)
Reiter-Regiment 7 -> Panzer-Regiment 2 (may 1935)
Reiter-Regiment 11 -> Schützen-Regimenter 1 and 3 (1934)
Reiter-Regiment 12 -> I. Abteilung / Panzer-Regiment 3 (1935)
Reiter-Regiment 16 -> Kradschützen-Bataillone 1, 2 and 3 (1934)
Other Reiter-Regimenter (RR 4,7,17,18) transfered fewer personell to new units

01.07.1936 : Reiter-Regiment now called Kavallerie-Regiment

1936 – 1938 : re-organizing of the Kavallerie-Regimenter
- integration of bycicle companies (Schwadronen) and
- Panzerspäh-Zügen (heavy recon platoons, first with cars, later recon tanks)

in 1938 the reorganization was finished ; the Kav.Rgts were under direct command of a
(Infanterie-)Armeekorps (= Korpstruppe) ; from a purely cavalry unit it’s composition had changed into a partly motorized unit, called “tmot”

Friedensgliederung of a Kavallerie-Regiment 1938 :
Regiments-Stab
11.(mot) Nachrichten-Schwadron

I. (Reiter-) Abteilung
5 Reiter-Schwadronen (1. – 5.)

II. (Radfahr-)Abteilung
3 Radfahr-Schwadronen (6. – 8.)

(9.)Pz.Abwehr-Schwadron (mot)
(10.)Schwere Schwadron (mot)

January 1939 :
13 Kav.Rgter remaining , and 2 Reiter-Regimenter of the Kav-Brigade in East Prussia
Conception : cavalry has to play the role of traditional troop cavalry, which has recon and
support duties ; Kav.Rgter -> to form Aufklärungs-Abteilungen for the infantry divisions

In fact on september 1st 1939 :
Kavallerie-Regimenter forming 52 “Divisions-Aufklärungs-Abteilungen” for 52 divisions
(49 Inf.Div and 3 Geb.Div) of 1st and 2nd wave.

Special and only Heereskavallerie unit :
1.(ostpr.) Kavallerie – Brigade , Insterburg (action in Poland)
1. Kavallerie-Division (formed / renamed 25.10.1939)
expansion 20.11.1939 : RR 21 and 22 / 2. Kav-Brigade (formed 07.12.1939)
restructuring / fully expanded to Kav.Div 14.02.1940 : II./RR 21 disbanded and
personal distributed to other 3 Rgts
couldn’t hold the speed of Pz.Divs in Russia, though competent fighting
05.11.1941 : “Schlußappell” ; last parade at GOMEL before dismounting
28.11.1941 : officially transformed into 24. Pz.Div

awardholders -> [page 12] of this thread : KC : 5 DKiG : 12

at this point the cavalry as an own branch-of-service to a great extent had ended to exist
with the exception of a few rider elements within the Divisions-Aufklärungs-Abteilungen
and elements like :
so-called “Infanterie – Reiterzüge”
formed one for each Infanterie-Regiment of 1st, 2nd and 4th wave for tactical reconnaissance.
These platoons are the so-called “weisse Reiter” , because they had white branch-of-service-color of the infantry they did belong to.
They existed till the end of WW2 and most of them ended as infantry men, their horses often eaten instead of nothing.

Structure of an Infanterie-Reiterzug : (32 men)
Zugführer / Zugtrupp / 3 Gruppen

3. 1942/43 – 1945 : rebirth of German Heereskavallerie on initiative of Rittmeister Georg Freiherr von Boeselager :

formation and development of cavalry units, beginning in 1942 :

19.03.1942 : on order of Generaloberst Model
Armee – Kavallerie-Kdo z.b.V. (Kdr: Oberst Holste) / 9. Armee / HGr Mitte
Armee – Reiter – Regiment 1
Armee – Reiter – Regiment 2
Armee – Reiter – Regiment 3
(formed from cavalry elements of the Aufkl.Abt of VI. / XXIII. and XXVII. AK ,
additionally strengthened through still existing Infanterie-Reiterzüge of infantry rgts)
[disbanded 24.07.1942]

Armee-Reiter-Regiment 2
German Cross in Gold (1)
König, Wilhelm 09.07.1942 Leutnant 5. Reiter-Schwadron/Armee-Kav.Rgt 2

summer/autumn 1942 : “Reiterverband von Winning” / 2. Armee / HGr Mitte
Stab : formed from Stab/Aufkl.Abt 134
4 Reiter – Schwadronen
later called : Reiter-Verband „Trubtschewsk“ (after it’s staff headquarter)
[disbanded spring 1943 and used to form III. Abteilung / Kavallerie-Regiment Mitte]

Christmas 1942 : visit of Rittmeister Georg Freiherr von Boeselager to staff Heeresgruppe Mitte, because his brother Philipp von Boeselager was Ordonnanz-Offizier of von Kluge. Meeting with GFM von Kluge and talk about re-formation of cavalry units ; Boeselager referred his concept of a fast and variable cavalry force for several purposes : security duties in the interior of Armeen and Heeresgruppen, also on the flanks ; having a fast reserve, highly movable, not facing the problems of technical troops (tanks and armoured cars) in regards to material and unpassable tracks. GFM von Kluge was convinced of the idea to get a kind of “Feuerwehr” under the command of his Heeresgruppe and therefore gave von Boeselager the permission to establish such a unit in the area of Heeresgrupe Mitte.

Georg von Boeselager was regarding himself in his own words as a
“berittener Infanterist” (mounted infantry man)

13.01.1943 : „Reiter-Verband Boeselager“ / HGr Mitte
on order of GFM Kluge formed from cavalry elements of AufklAbt : 6, 34, 35 and
Schnelle Abt : 102, 186 and strengthened through 350 Cossacks
-> 4 Schwadronen

On order of OKH from 16.03.1943 m.W.v. (with effect on) 01.04.1943
from “Reiter-Verband Boeselager” forming of :

Kavallerie – Regiment Mitte :
(abbreviation often used : K.R.M.)
as a so-called “Versuchstruppenteil” (demonstration unit)

therfore on order of HGr Mitte 4. Armee , 9. Armee and 3. Pz.Armee have sent during
march 1943 the Reiter-Schwadronen, which until then remained in their Aufkl.Abteilungen :

Radfahr-Abt 31 / 31. ID / Div.Btl 131 / 131. ID / Radf.Abt 152 / 52. ID /
Schnelle Abt 187 / 87. ID / Aufkl.Abt 129 / 129. ID / Schnelle Abt 330 / 330. ID /
Schnelle Abt 331 / 331. ID / Schnelle Abt 186 / 86. ID

Here are three Heer recipients of the German Cross in Gold who received their awards while assigned to Lufwaffe assault gun units. I presume these can be added to the list on page 21 - see Feld-Divisionen (L).

Here are the recipients of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and the German Cross in Gold who received their awards while assigned to the Füsilier-Bataillon Demba.

Does anyone have any background information on this battalion: general history, higher headquarters assignment, fate, etc.? Thanks for any assistance!

Best regards,
Shawn

A small correcture for 4.KavDiv :

EBS :

Graf von Oberndorff is not confirmed by Scherzer

But I can add Hauptmann Günter Geerling on 25.03.45 , PzJgAbt.70

All others of 4.KavBrg./KavDiv. are listed correct and are confirmed by Scherzer .

Good work , Bernd !!!

Jan-Hendrik,

thanks ! von Oberndorff crossed out (date 00.00.1945/Scheibert, 1983), Geerling added

Shawn,

there are two versions used for Füsilier-Bataillon "Deba" (Demba).
As I'm aware the origin name of the location is "Deba".

Deba/Demba was a Truppenübungsplatz (training ground).
One "Feldunteroffizierschule der Infanterie" was located there, later forming the
so-called Füs.Btl "Deba", under command of Kdt "Fester Platz Tarnopol".
Found these two threads about this topic / KC holder Balzer :
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... t=btl+deba
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=68522
(requested for more detail on Btl "Deba" there)

short Bio of Balzer can be found here :

good idea, Jan-Hendrik ! 8-) :)
will place "Alarm-Einheiten" (first entry Füs.Btl "Deba") behind the category "Divisionen, Brigaden, Regimenter, various" next update.

Shawn,
answers to previous questions after my research / to my knowlegde :
I take it the below listed DKiG recipient should be counted with the 100. Jäger-Division?

Riedel, Johann, 22.03.1945, Lt. d.R., Pz.Jg.Kp. 1100
normally yes, but :
I can't see or find a source that is stating a "Pz.Jäg.Kp 1100" within 100. Jäg.Div.
Pz.Jäg.Abt 100 / 100. Jäg.Div had a ("normal") 4 company (instead of 3) structure until the end.

Tessin research did bring out the following, which is the most probable explanation to me.
Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 348 / 348. Inf.Div (= ex 2./Pz.Jäg.Abt 348) was sent to the
Eastern Front and renamed Stug.Abt 1601 . In june 1944 it was renamed Stug.Abt 1100 .
This company then was incorporated into Pz.Jäg.Abt 175 of the 75. Infanterie-Division
as the 2.Kompanie. Not quite clear, if number "1100" was kept (think yes).
So, to me : unit of 75. Inf.Div
re-checked "348" -> "1601" story here :
http://209.85.129.104/search?q=cache:72 ... e&ie=UTF-8

Would be great, if someone could re-check / confirm the structure of Pz.Jäg.Abt 100
of the 100. Jäger-Division.

Fuchs, Alois, 02.02.1942, Ofw., 16./Pz.Jäg.Rgt. 204 (Scheibert lists regiment as such; possibly a typo or another unit altogether?)
97. Jäg-Div / 97. leichte Inf.Div [page 25]

This is a classical (small) error / typo (a Pz.Jäg.Rgt 204 didn't exist)
correct : 16.(Pz.Jäg)/Inf.Rgt 204

97. leichte Infanterie-Division was a division of 12. Welle and like all other infantry regiments of these leichte Inf.Divs Infanterie-Regiment 204 had a different structure to other Inf.Rgts :
Stab , NachrZug, Radfahrzug
3 Bataillone -> 5 Kompanien each
16. Pak-Kp (mot) (12xPak 3,7cm [first] )
I. 1 - 5 II. 6 - 10 III. 11 - 15 , 16

so, it is meant and to read 16. Kompanie (= Panzerjäger)
leaves open the Rgt designation, which must be Infanterie - Rgt , because IR 204 was renamed Jäg.Rgt 204 in july 1942 first (-> award date 02.02.1942 !)

noted down : DKiG : 105 DKiS : 1 NKiG : 3

Knoll, Willy, 21.02.1945, St.Int., Verw.Kp. 8 Verw.Tr.Abt. 8 (Question: Was this a component of the 8. Jäger-Division?)
Yes. Nachschubtruppen / Verwaltungsdienste of 8. Pz.Div were numbered "59" .

noted down : DKiG : 124 DKiS : 5

Zahn, Hans-Ludwig, 14.04.1943, Oblt., 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt.28 (Scheibert lists this unit as “heavy”; is this correct or a typo?)
Pz.Jäg.Abt 28 / 28. Jäg.Div wasn't "heavy". Must be a typo.
Possible explanation : 2.(s.)/~ , eventually 2. Kompanie was (at times) called heavy.

noted down : DKiG : 85 NKiG : 1

[8. Pz.Div is still open and on the agenda]

Bernd,

Thank you for the info and clarification – I’ve revised my lists accordingly!

I’m working on several more DKiG lists and will post them soon:

11. Infanterie-Division
5. Infanterie-Division / 5. leichte Division / 5. Jäger-Division
100. leichte Infanterie-Division / 100. Jäger-Division
121. Infanterie-Division

Speaking of the 5. Jäger-Division, do you know the eaxct date that Infanterie-Regiment 14 transferred from the division – 15 Oct 1942 perhaps?

Thanks again!

Best regards,
Shawn

Infanterie – Regiment 14 (assigned until nov 1941) :
quote from KC list 5. Jäg.Div [page 10]
nov 1941 transferred to 78. ID, when 5. ID was renamed/restructured 5. leichte Div.
15.10.1942 is the date for renaming IR -> GR
