THE COMMANDER 1 TC
The GENERAL - MAJOR of a tank troops: - /BUTKOV /

THE CHIEF OF THE ARMY HEADQUARTERS 1 TC
THE LIEUTENANT COLONEL:- / KHARCHEVNIKOV /

Note: 33-rd fighting anti-tank regiment (4 batteries of anti-tank guns) and 308-th Guards mortar divisional (8 battle installations "Katjusha" M-8 on the basis of the chassis of tank T-70) were attached 1-st Tank Corps from the beginning of operation "Uranus". Their number is taken into account in structure of units 1-st Tank Corps.

Comparing with the contents of the order of an army headquarters 1 TC No 043 from 5/12/42 and the order of an army headquarters 336 ID No 042 from 6/12/42 we can see the valid reason of destruction of battalions of 7-th Airfield Division.
According to the order of general Ljuht's army headquarters, the main forces of 7-th Airfield Division (13-th Airfield Regiment) should come in sector between balka Ostrow and balka Golaja.
On the other hand, from the order of an army headquarters 1 TC No 043 we see, that the general - major Butkov has chosen this sector for impact by the main forces.

The situation for 7-th Airfield Division was aggravated with that on positions the first impact of Russian jet installations of a volley fire ("Katjusha" from 35GMR, 75GMR and 308GMD) was rendered to her initial positions.
Impact of jet installations of a volley fire ("Katjusha") on an infantry taking place on open district (in not shelter) causes to her catastrophic damage.

Here actions of units of 5TA 7/12/42 in battle for state farm «Red Star» (sowkhoz No 79) are shown.

We can see, how actually there was a destruction of battalions of 7-th Airfield Division.
It becomes clear why had the big losses battalions of battle group STUMPFELD in spite of the fact that units of this battle group did not participate in attack on bridgehead, and were in the second line.

Pay attention: real actions of units of Red Army have essential differences of that has been stipulated in the plan of an operation.

From documents it is visible, that command of 5-th Tank Army did not expect to meet in region of state farm «Red Star» (sovkhoz No 79) three new divisions of the opponent.
All the more of these new divisions one was a tank division.
However, from the documents grasped in an army headquarters of colonel Pashke (685-th infantry regiment) it became clear, that here be present received updating general Lucht's 336th ID. Captured from 687-th infantry regiment have informed, that this in this regiment is added by 94-th ersatz a battalion.
94-th ersatz the battalion on 40 percent has consisten of Poles.
In a platoon there were 25 Germans and 15 Poles. The battalion had four companies.
It meant, that in 336 ID was not less than 15,000 person. Hence in one this German division was almost so much the person, how many had working on bridgehead in 333 RD, 1 TC and 3 GCC (without 32 CD).

Seeing such affair, commander 5 TA has given to 19.40 7/12 order on movements on bridgehead of 47-th Guards RD and 8-th Guards separate tank brigade.
For movement of 47-th Guards RD all cash motor-vehicle transport of 5-th tank army has been involved.

Apparently to the map, by the end of day of 7/12 the units 333 RD could not carry out a problem in full.
Reason - even after destruction on tracks of Russian tanks of two battalions 7-th air - field division and serious losses in other units, on a site 333 RD the opponent (Germans) had the repeated superiority in an infantry and tanks. Apparently on the map, Russian tanks, after pass of heights 129.0 and 155.0, have turned on the south and have left of the borders zone the colonel Zerebin's division.

Besides, a serious obstacle 333 RD was that at there was no ammunition.
It is visible from below-mentioned documents:
1) The report of an army headquarters 333 RD from 6/12/42 commanding 5TA;
2) BATTLE DIRECTION No 10 army headquarters 333 RD on approach 7/12/42

Besides it is let off with JARSKOJ 2-nd
76 mm DA - 200 pieces and 122 mm DA - 80 pieces behind which 4/12/42 machines have left and till now have not come back.

Has decided: immediately to send machines behind an ammunition from station SOLONOVO, but the motor transport therefrom can return not earlier than 8-9/12/42 /one way 270 km/
At reception of the specified ammunition, the division will have by an outcome 9/12/42 - without taking into account the charge for these days:

I report you a condition with an ammunition, I ask your help in the fastest updating of a division by an ammunition and the foodstuffs.

The 7-th airfield division had six infantry battalions.
Four her battalions took part in battle 7/12. Two destroyed battalions (which came in sector between a balka Golaja and a balka Ostrow ) belonged 13-th airfield regiment. Other two battalions of 7-th airfield division came to the south a balka Ostrow in together with the colonel Brikman's 687-th infantry regiment.
8/12 those two battalions of 7-th airfield division which was not in fight 7/12 participated in German attack also.

The following is very interesting.
7/12 under attack of Russian tanks 685-th infantry regiment of colonel Pashke, instead of battalions of 7-th airfield division could suffer.
It is visible from the battle order of an army headquarters 1 TC No 042 from 4/12/42 which, however, next day has been significally changed.
According to it the order the main impact Russian tanks rendered through height 161, that is on a site 685-th infantry regiment.

Next day, that is 8/12 army headquarters XLVIII PzKorp in every way attacked Russian on bridgehead.
This attack has received wide popularity in the West as " Balck's attack ".
She is drawn on very beautiful Japanese map.
As this known in the West attack actually looks, you can see only here.

So the real attack that hurt the Soviet plan is really the one by Group Stmpfeld ?!
8.12.42

Source: Gustav Schrödek's history of Pz.Rgt. 15. (I had been barely able to understand it, so please be comprehensible with me about posting this in German, a good translation would be above my capabilities)

The most interesting part says that the Pz.Rgt.'s attack hit a motorized column that was just setting off to the east and that they caught them completely by surprise so much so that it was completely destroyed. Which Soviet unit would THAT be?

Also, it says that the German attack began at 7.00 o'clock and that after the destruction of the motorized column, it attacked Soviet tanks. In your map, it seems like it was 117 TBr which was used as a fire brigade. Did it suffered any losses from the first German attack?

BTW, in Schrödek's photo history of 11 Pz.Div., there are pictures of the two knocked out KV tanks. Do you have any photo of the action/after-battle or even of the area south of the Chir?

Additional information from after action reports of 1st tank corps:
According to the battle order of the 5th Tank Army HQ (# 0012 on 30/11/1942), 1st tank corps was ordered:
- On 1/12/42 at 8.00 cross river Chir around Svirisovsky and striking towards elevation 161 capture Sysonkin
- Continue towards Verhne-Aksenovskij, and deploy outposts facing west around Sovkhox 78.

To implement this order, the 1st tank corps commander created a group consisting of:
-From 44th motor-rifle brigade - combined motor rifle battalion, artillery battalion, AAA battalion, mortar battalion
-From 89th and 117th tank brigades - all tanks in running order:
KV-1: 1
T-34 : 1
T-60 : 5
T-70: 1
-354th and 355th guards mortar battalions of the 75th guards mortar regiment
-33 anti-tank destroyer regiment
-Two 37mm batteries from the 247th AAA (battalion?)

By morning the group was assembled around Svirodonsky, except for the units from the 44th motor-rifle brigade.
44th motor rifle brigade was not relieved by the 258th rifle division in time and continued to defend it's section of the line.

Due to absence of infantry the assault was postponed. The enemy air force, in groups of 10 to 15, was continually bombing the area around Sviridovsky where the units were located.

Neighbors to the right - around Surovikino 119th rifle division, to the left - 3rd cavalry corps.

On the 2/12/1942 the battle group the 1st tank corps created to implement the order of the 5th Army HQ (#0012) went into action.
By 11.30 on 2/12/1942 two crossings across Chir around Sviridovsky were created, and by 13.00 tanks the infantry crossed to the south bank, sending patrols ahead of the main grouping.

Reconnaissance patrol #1 sent towards Golovsky reported that 5 km. south-east of Surovikino it came under machine gun fire from the height 107.2.
Reconnaissance patrol #2 sent towards height 161 reported that it came under mortar fire from Sysojkin.
Reconnaissance patrol #3 sent towards height 156 reported that the enemy left height 156 towards south-west.
Untill 16.00 the battle group of the 1st tank corps did not move, due to the fact that the enemy air force had superiority in the air and 15-30 planes continually bombed the battle group, pinning it down.
By 16.00 the battle group of the 1st tank corps went on the offensive. By morning of the 3/12/1942 it captured the enemy's first line of defense around height 161. No further progress took place, since it encountered a strong anti-tank defense region on the reverse slopes of heights 161 and 156.0.

According to the verbal order of the commander of the 5th Tank Army, the tank brigades retreated to the rear to reorganize and prepare for future fighting, according to the 5th Army HQ order #14/OP VPU.
89th tank brigade around Shirkov
117th tank brigade around Markinskij
159th tank brigade around Burackij - in 5th Tank Army commander's reserve
44th motor rifle brigade - one combined battalion defending the southern slopes of the height 161.
307th guards mortar battalion around Markinskij

Current strength:
89th tank brigade: T-34: 6, T-60: 6, anti-tank guns: 2, active strength (bayonets): 90 men

Regards
It would appear that the 15th Panzer regiment ran into the 1st tank corps rear area, and wreaked some havoc there. The 117th and 159th tank brigades were the ones who fought with the enemy tanks, so those are likely to be the main culprits.

It is the most probable, that the German source calls « the motorized column » group of motorcyclists of structure 8-th separate motorcycle regiment. This group operated in rears of the opponent.
Any others « the motorized column » here were not.

Your information from «The Report on actions of 1-st tank corps in November (Uranus) and December (Saturn) operations ».
Unfortunately, this source though is made under initial documents, however in some essential moments he does not correspond to the contents of these initial documents.
Last remark concerns in the first to battle of state farm "Red Star" (No 79).

So, after an end of the war in the books and numerous applications former commanders of a Wermacht generals - tankmen the Balck and the von Mellenthin indefatigably repeated, that, ostensibly, on December, 8, 1942 working under a sensitive management of these German generals 11-n the tank division has surrounded and has destroyed in settlement Sysojkin - the central manor of state farm « Red Star » (state farm with a serial number 79) - fifty three tanks from structure of 1-st tank corps Russian.
On my map «Battle of state farm «Red Star» (state farm 79) 8/12/42 » Is visible, that in settlement Sysojkin (state farm 79) German 11-n the tank division has surrounded 216-th tank brigade - the commander the lieutenant colonel the Kozhanov.

We have an opportunity to find out from the lieutenant colonel of the Kozhanov as events 8/12/42 in state farm «Red Star» (state farm 79) actually developed.
That the lieutenant colonel the Kozhanov in 4.00 9/12/42 years after he with the brigade, having broken through a ring of an encirclement, came in Ostrowskij has informed.
Paying attention. The official report of the lieutenant colonel of the Kozhanov is made right after a breaking out from the encirclement.

Map 100 000

216 tank brigade, at 8:50 on the 7/12/42, after breaking through the enemy defensive line between height 129.0 and 155.0, fought its way through Sovkhoz 79 and captured it at 12:30 7/12/42. After the capture of Sovkhoz 79, the defence was organized as was the clearing of the houses from hiding enemy submachine gunners. The defence lasted until 12:00 on the 8/12/42.

During the 7 and 8/12/42, the brigade captured and destroyed: 500 soldiers and officers were killed; it was seized 55 vehicles, 23 motorcycles, 270 horses, 74 wagons, 4 kitchens, 3 depots with food provisions, 2 horse-drawn convoys; and 18 guns and mortars were destroyed.

At 10:30 on the 8/12/42, the motorcycle regiment arrived in Sovkhoz 79. At 12:00 8/12/42, I decided to resume the offensive and attack Nizhne-Solonovskij. Moving forward, the brigade, encountering on the southern slopes of height 137.8 4 dug-in heavy tanks, 8 75mm automatic AT guns and 2 battalions of enemy motorized infantry, was delayed by the artillery fire, as a result of which 2 KV tanks were set ablaze.

At 14:00, the road connecting Sovkhoz 79 with Ostrovskij was cut by the enemy, so the brigade adopted an all-round defence.
The 581 tank battalion on height 137.8, the motorised-rifle MG battalion on height 160.3.

With the 580 tank battalion, I embarked on an attack against the enemy tanks which went in the area of the barn* to the east. From the north-west – from height 165.6 – the enemy went into the attack with 12 tanks, from which 7 were heavy, and up to a regiment of motorised infantry with artillery. From the east – from the western slopes of height 156.0 – the enemy conducted the attack with a group of 22 tanks and motorised infantry. From height 137.8, up to a regiment of motorised infantry with artillery began to attack.

As a result of the lack of support from the infantry, (we) found ourselves cut off from the rear and without supplies. Our defence held for 6 hours.
No instructions about subsequent actions were ever received from the 1st Tank Corps. Neither were there any instructions by radio. The situation from the south-east appeared to me to be uncertain. The enemy fire came from all sides. The aviation displayed exceptional activity.

Having expended 3/4 of the ammunitions stock and 1/2 of the fuel reserves, I decided to break out and reunite with our forces in the direction: balka Derbentseva, height 148.3, Lisinskij. While carrying out this decision, (we) ran into an enemy group of 22 tanks and 6 AT guns. An engagement ensued. As a result of combat, 4 heavy and 2 medium tanks as well as 3 AT guns were destroyed.
The enemy stopped. Using the enemy’s confusion, I continued further along the planned route. We lost 2 T-70 tanks and 2 Chevrolet** with (their) AT guns. The column continued the advance with 6 KV tanks, 1 T-34, 2 T-70 and the command tank.

From the beginning of combat, the motorcycle regiment left my control, did not support the fighting and brought for itself the most part of the motorised-rifle MG battalion. Advancing along the planned route, in the ravine 4 km west of Lisinskij, (we) linked up with 89 tank brigade and, together, reached our forces along the route: height 106.6, ravine south of Sulatskij, through height 96.4, Ostrovskij.

The equipment I have: 8 KV, 1 T-34, 2 T-70, 1 gun of the AT battalion. I do not have complete information about the motorised-rifle MG battalion – there were 80 men at the assembly.
I bring the equipment into order. One day is necessary to fix the broken engines of 3 KV tanks. All equipment had their engines endured from 180 to 200 running hours.

Conclusion:
1. I consider that the circumstances allowed the consolidation of Sovkhoz 79 and the capture of Nizhne and Verkhne – Solonovskij, with the exception of the support from 333 Rifle Division, which never reached Sovkhoz 79.
2. I consider that the field camp*** and the north-western perimeter of Sovkhoz 79 were insufficiently covered, and this led to the penetration of the enemy.

Maybe, but I got it from f. 3398, op. 1, d. 4, l. 59-79 . (Отчеты и доклады о боевых действиях корпуса с приложениями).
