I believe the "henne42" label is just the photo owner's property mark. But he is pointing out the black band on the cuff of the woman's jacket, which I think is a mourning band (?)

Some nice video, especially the footage of Hanna Reitsch.

I want to thank everyone who's contributed, this has been a wonderful thread offering quite the rare glimpse into history.
Not to be a necromancer, but can anyone comment on this picture?

The woman in the middle looks positively Asian, maybe Japanese or Korean... but nobody else in the photo does. Is this Hungarian or Romanian... Suomi? Or am I being thrown by a trick of light, shadow, and the kabuto-esque look of the helmets?
Pretty sure, at least, that the image name is wrong. The woman on the left is far too physically matured to be a valid Bund Deutscher Mädel member!!

Hello Hitguy!
First of all
To the best of my knowledge the only German women working in Africa on an official mission were a number of nurses and laboratory technicians of the German Red Cross.
A number of female Luftwaffe personell were active on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea in Southern France, Italy and Greece. Schlicht & Angolia (1999, p.518) briefly describe two kinds of summer uniform worn by Luftwaffe Helferinnen. One was light blue, the other white. We treated this subject shortly here http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 4#p1254474 once.
I think that's the closest you can get to any hypothetical Luftwaffe female Africa uniform at the moment.

I don't think there were any Luftwaffe Helferinnen in Africa ever. At least I've never heard of any though I've been reading all kinds of literature on Helferinnen for several years now.Hitguy wrote:Hello!

Re: Female Auxiliary Photographs
Hello Stojespal!
First of all
On the potential pedigree of the woman in question:
May sound strange to you but to me (having grown up in rural Westphalia) she doesn't look 'un-german' at all. Actually she reminds me of the wife of our local filling station owner in my home village and her daughters. They're perfectly local genetic material as far as I can tell. You'll find these features (round face, stub nose, slightly slitted eyes) quite frequently in Northern Germany. Of course anybody is free to speculate if this hints to some Eskimo blood in the German gene pool or if it's perhaps a lasting souvenir of the Mongolian raid on Europe in 1242.
On the BDM connection:
I don't know why member 'carius' named the file 'bdm.jpg', presumably because the Ebay vendor wrote something about BDM. We all know what to think of the expertise of the general Ebay seller, I think. (On the other hand this occasionally leads to real nice bargains for those who really know what they're buying ) You're absolutely correct that auxiliary firefighters were recruited not only from the BDM. Actually all kinds of younger, able-bodied women were conscripted into the various branches of fire-fighting when the necessity arose during the second half of WWII. We have a thread on female firefighters here http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 73#p981573 showing a multitude of uniforms and gear in use. Actually female firefighters is one of the most non-uniform uniforms in the Third Reich realm, and there are really hard contenders for that title.
Best regards
Torsten
