Dylan, please help...

Hello Dylan,

I'm hoping you can help me find some info. on a family member -my great grandfather - who was arrested and (presumably) executed in 1945 in a very mysterious set of events. I've tried every history book but the information I found doesn't get into detail. You're my last hope, so if you could help me, I would be very grateful. Here is the basic info:

Name: Gheorghe Avramescu
Nationality: Romania
Rank: 4-star General (in some books he's listed as Lt. General - 3 stars)
Command: Commander of Romanian 4th Army, attached to Soviet Ukrainean Army Group 2 led by Marshall Malinovsky.
Location at time of disappearance: Lucenec, Slovakia
Date at time of disappearance: March 3rd, 1945.
Motive for arrest: None/denied by Soviets it ever happened. Malinovsky continuously praised him and held a party in his honor when he joined the Army Group in Slovakia.
Circumstances: On March 2nd, 1945, while on the front in Slovakia, he received a telegram from the Romanian government informing him that he had been appointed Minister of Defence. He in turn writes a note to his wife informing her of the news and instructing her to go back to Romania (she was accompanying him on the front). In the note he informs her that he will be joining her in Romania a few days later for the inauguration ceremony.
The next day, on March 3rd, 1945, he is called by General Jmacenko (Zhmacenko?) to Soviet Army headquarters for a meeting with Malinovsky regarding transition of command to new commander. He never returned from the meeting. The officers and soldiers who accompanied him to the meeting (adjutant, bodyguard group, etc) were arrested and sent to Siberia for 10-15 years. His wife was also arrested and sent to a labor camp in Siberia. Romanian government had no knowledge of disappearance/arrest. Our family inquired about him the same year. The Red Cross sent us a letter saying he was killed by a German bomb raid in Budapest (obviously false).

What I'm trying to do is to find the arrest and execution order issued either by the NKVD or by Malinovsky. Also, I'd like to know the motive, as well as some more specific info, such as, was he executed the same day, was he sent to Moscow first, etc...
There is no apparent reason for his execution. There is one theory that's circulating in some history books that states that the Soviets were suspecting that he was communicating with the Germans, but I know from family sources and from some of his fellow generals that this is not true.

Any kind of information would be of much interest to me. If you can't help me, perhaps you can direct me to a historian who might have access to more extensive archives?

Many thanks in advance, and good luck in your search for info.

Mihai.

Hi dylan

Correction on your info on Gosberg. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on 4/5/1949 (not 5 years). Released in 1956, he was arrested by the West German authorities and submitted for trial at Wuppertal where he received a 12 year sentence on 19/5/1961.

Hi Mihai

Sorry, I can't help with your search either. I know of several Officers who were arrested or kidnapped at the end of the war by the Soviets, some for no apparent reason. Many were never heard of again.

Regards and best of luck
