Map, Thailand, U.S. Air Bases, Vietnam War, from F-105 Wild Weasel vs. SA-2 "Guideline" SAM, Vietnam 1965-1973

Note: The above map does not indicate Nakhon Phanom ("Ph" prounce as "p" not "f"), northeast Thailand, as a U.S. base.

Note: During the era of forced communist expansionism, Thailand successfully defended its neutrality by authorizing U.S. air bases to provide tactical air support against Russian- and Chinese-supplied communist aggression in Indochina (North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia). Thailand, the only country in the region never colonized by European powers, was not inclined towards prejudice against European-looking westerners. U.S. air bases in Thailand operated, in general, without coming under terrorist attacks. ... Meanwhile, U.S. bases in South Vietnam were constantly under insurgent/terrorist assaults, sniper fire, rocket attacks, assassinations, and enemy infiltration. ... South Vietnamese military forces were not well led nor motivated due to corruption. Only with the support of Nixon and U.S. air power could they defend South Vietnam against elite North Vietnamese communist units bent on aggression. ... Nixon's support in Congress began to wane in 1973 because of the ongoing Watergate scandal (Nixon's offenses were essentially the same type of hardball politics waged by other Presidents) combined with the length of the Vietnam war and antiwar feelings due to the draft of the 1960s. Consequently, Congress cut off funding for the war in Southeast Asia, effective August 15, 1973. ... Minus U.S. air support, which left a power vacuum, Indochina fell to communist aggression in the Spring of 1975, resulting in unspeakable mass atrocities, genocide, and executions. ... However, Thailand did not fall to communist expansionism and thus remained free, due in part to Nixon's deployment of U.S. air power.

4/28/1972, U.S. Trade Deficit Reaches Three-Month Record of $1.5 Billion

Note: The U.S. trade deficit in 1972 totaled $5.5 billion. In 2006, the trade deficit reached $753 billion. A hundred dollars in 1972 would be worth $567 in 2014. In 1972, the U.S. could afford the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and sending men to the moon because it had not yet begun to run massive trade deficits. ... Currently, the U.S. budget deficit is $16 trillion. One dollar of trade deficit for the U.S. equals two dollars in budget deficit. The redistribution of wealth creation away from America resulted in a poor China becoming rich and a rich America becoming broke.

Good afternoon Globalization 41,

Ref: post 2 of 14 April Note;

I recall Thailand was a member of SEATO and thus not a neutral.

There is much more to: "South Vietnamese forces were not well led nor motivated dues to corruption". A major factor is also that some of the members of the South Vietnamese forces ("ARVN"[ Army of the Republic of Vietnam]) worked for the North Vietnamese government.

See: THE COMMUNIST INSURGENT INFRASTRUCTURE IN SOUTH VIETNAM: A STUDY OF ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGY by Michael Charles Conley, 1967, DA Pam 550-106.

.....

I want to address the link entries' date of 4/8/1972 by William Buckley And James Reston. Again, it's the date I'm commenting on. Had not read the links.

On 9 July 1971 (again: 1971) Kissinger secretly went to Beijing

In November, 1971, PR China joins the UN, an organization where the US had a veto.

On 27 February 1972, PRC and the US issue the "First Joint Communique" ("Shanghai I")

My 3 entries above can be used to say Hanoi's Politburo experienced a cold sweat panic attack.

Chairman Mao and President Nixon signed something that involved the Vietnam War. Lee Duk Tho and Kissinger spending time in Paris was more about wine sampling. The die was cast before the Buckley and Reston material and well prior to the Kissinger and Tho's sightseeing in Paris.

Warm regards,

Bob

Thailand wanted neutrality. It did what was necessary to defend its neutrality. Defending one's neutrality is not necessarily neutrality. The revolutionary communists were the aggressors, supplied by Russia and China. Had Thailand not allowed U.S. bases, it would have suffered the same fate as Cambodia. Communist aggression in Southeast Asia ran out of steam after Cambodia due to the accumulative affect of U.S. interventionism from the early 1960s. In fact, Thailand defended its neutrality during the Cambodian Genocide by not allowing communist atrocities to spill over into Thailand.

Good morning Globalization 41,

I'm following your thinking and agree - however - I would have said Thailand's efforts were to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The word "neutrality" was a "curve ball" when I read it.

Re your post 10 of 27 May 14, 22:26;

The Note says "In 1972, the U.S. could afford the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and sending men to the moon because it had not yet begun to run massive trade deficits".

No ! They started when LBJ concurrently ran the Vietnam War and the Great Society domestic programs. This was accomplished with deficit spending.

In March, 1968, Secretary of the Treasury Henry Fowler complained to LBJ that the US dollar was soon to be threatened. He was correct. Again, this was 1968. Massive trade deficits alone could not cripple the US. All these accumulated economic problems could - and did - . President Nixon inherited the Bretton Woods headache and the blame.

Hi Bob. I tend to disagree that the trade deficit is of less significance than deficit spending. It was easy to find a job during the deficit-spending days of WWII and the Vietnam War. Now days you have to have an appointment just to get an application. Had FDR's and LBJ's economic policies included running massive trade deficits, it would have increased deficit spending from what it was. ... Buying more while producing less is not a good business model. ... The dollar has inflated by 5.7 since 1972. The trade deficit is 100 times greater now than in 1972. The redistribution of wealth-creating factories away from America, means less tax revenues from those becoming unemployed and more food stamps needed for redistribution by a poorer Uncle Sugar. ... Maybe it's only a coincidence regarding the trade deficit, but in 1972 America could afford to send men to the moon while now days the U.S. has to hitch a ride just to reach orbit. ... An overflow of American wealth, as in WWII, would be better for the world economy than pulling the economic-protectionism partition.

Good morning Globalization 41,

I'm following your train of thought and reasoning.

There was (is) a close link between the deficit spending and the trade deficit.

Prior to and blending into the Vietnam War the economic environment was:

-FDR's Social Security retirement program (the disability programs funded from the same apparatus arrived later [Glob, I'm writing these extra points for other AHF participants not familiar]).

-LBJ's Medicare program, a major feature of the LBJ Great Society domestic programs (Medicare was mostly government-funded medical care for the old (~65 years old). Both these programs siphoned away investment capital from the US market economy as these programs matured.

The oil embargoes arrived and besides the need for energy for the American economy's increased activity, the pension funds were loaded with oil company stocks (shares) along with the economic cousins like Penn Central Railroad shares.

All above allows me to offer a comment in re Cold War - Vietnam War - Easter Offensive specifically focused to:

"...wealth-creating factories away from America, means less tax revenue..."

One large example can explain. At the end of the Vietnam War and the new US-China opening, Boeing went to China and opened 13 state-of-the art facilities....best logistics...best telecommunications and etc. To exxagerate the point.....if Boeing didn't go to China to make components for civil airliners, Boeing might have met the same fate as Penn Central RR.

The Vietnam War was the straw on the camel's back too late for veterinary intervention to help.

We witnessed this history.

Warm regards,

Bob
