Anti Partisan Operations

#1

Post by Matt Gibbs » 23 Mar 2002, 02:30

Hello!
I am looking for recommendations for books on this subject with reference to the units involved and some of the operations carried out, and who by. This relates to some research I am doing about the Anti-Partisan War Badge. Any help appreciated.
Regards

Hey,
You can try the Cruel Hunters by Maclean, about Oskar Dirlewanger. Some people like it and some think its terrible!
Also try Angelraybooks for others.

You might also want to try "German Anti-Partisan Warfare in Europe 1939 - 1945" by Colin Heaton.

For a general easy read about Partisan Warfare on the Russian Front, try Matthew Cooper's "The Phantom War" (ISBN 0-354-01220-7) and for a more detailed look about Partisan warfare in the Balkans try the Divisional history of the 7th SS 'Prinz Eugen'. (ISBN 0-921991-29-0)
Very detailed. This book links in well with the divisional history of the 13th SS 'Handschar'. Also look at the divisional history of the 14th SS 'Galicia' Division.

Have someone read Heaton's book - German Anti-Partisan Warfare in Europe: 1939-1945 ?

It didn't get good reviews at Amazon.

There's a pretty vast literature out there on the subject from divisional histories (7 SS, 1 Geb) to detailed studies.

If you can track down a copy, John Armstrong's Soviet Partisans in World War II is good if dated. Otherwise Cooper's Phantom War isn't a bad introduction to the subject (and rather easier to find)

This is a very good series of studies on occupational policy in general:

(The English version is slightly abridged from the original German)

These are free if somewhat dated:

http://www.history.army.mil/books/wwii/ ... BALKAN.HTM
Those are DA publications from the so called "German Report Series" and both are quite good. Another you might consider is DA Pamphlet 20-244 "The Soviet Partisan Movement 1941-1944" by Edgar Howell. It's a "pamphlet" in name only, and is actually a 200 plus page book complete with nice fold out maps. This one is excellent in my opinion, and can sometimes be found at reasonable prices on ebay
