1,500 Jewish Businesses "Aryanized" in Paris

Vichy, France, Wireless to The New York
Times,
By G.H. Archambault, Thursday,
September 4, 1941:
Fifteen hundred Jewish-
owned businesses in Paris have been
"Aryanized," it was announced today in Paris
by Xavier Vallat, Vichy's Commissioner for
Jewish Questions. M. Vallat said 80 percent
of Jewish commercial activity had been
centered in Paris. ... ... A German Army
sergeant was shot at [and wounded in the
shoulder]
in Paris last night near the Gare de
l'Est. He was unable to identify his assailant.
German occupation authorities [took over the
investigation from the French].
... This new
attack has increased the general feeling of
uneasiness in Paris, since the occupation
authority warned that it held 30,000 to 40,000
French nationals in prison as hostages
for
the good behavior of the populace on Aug. 21
after a German ensign named Mauser had
been slain in a subway by persons still
unidentified. Pervious to this there had
occurred numerous cases of sabotage on
railroads
leading out of Paris. ... The
uneasiness was increased by the shooting of
Pierre Laval and Marcel Deat, leading
advocates of "collaboration" with Germany,
last week in Versailles at a parade of Legion
of French Volunteers to Fight Bolshevism
and
by reports of attacks on Jews. The latter
included the murder of Adolphe Rosenthal, a
well-known dealer of gems, by three men who
represented themselves to be policemen. ...
Both M. Laval and M. Deat, who are still in a
hospital at Versailles, were reported tonight
to be making satisfactory progress. It has not
yet been decided which court will try Paul
Collette,
their assailant. He insists that he is
not a Communist and the new summary
courts were set up to try only Anarchists and
Communists.
For all other categories of
accused the normal jurisdiction is the Assize
Court, with trial by jury.

French Civil Service Reminds Jews to Register

#2

Post by Globalization41 » 29 Jun 2004, 01:31

Vichy, France, Wireless to The New York
Times,
Saturday, June 21, 1941: The attention
of all Jews in unoccupied France was called
today to the provisions of the June 2nd law
compelling them within one month to make a
written declaration of their "race," religion,
family connections, professions, and
possessions. ... Laws regarding Jews differ
between the occupied and unoccupied zones.
In Paris regulations are issued in two forms,
one indicating that such regulations are ordered
by the occupying authority and the other
emanating directly from the Commissariat
General for Jewish Questions.
In the
unoccupied zone the orders of the occupying
authorities do not have the force of law. ... In
today's decree the services of the commissariat
are described as "temporary." The word
"temporary" is used also in connection with the
personnel of the commissariat, which must not
exceed 252. Those not already belonging to
the civil service will be engaged on the
understanding that they may be dismissed with
one month's notice. ... Salaries range from
1,300 to 8,600 francs monthly. The salary of
the Commissioner, General Xavier Vallat, is
set for 150,000 francs a year [or 12,500 francs
monthly].

Tokyo, Wireless to The New York Times, By
Otto D. Tolischus, Sunday, June 22: [Late
Sat., U.S. Time]
If an editorial in the Japan
Times Advertiser
is any indication of Tokyo's
official view, the Japanese Government has no
objection to Germany's helping Russia develop
her natural resources
for the benefit of Europe
in the same way that Japan proposes to help
China develop her resources for the benefit of
"Greater East Asia."

Cairo, Wireless to The New York Times,
Saturday, June 21, 1941: Three Italian
bombers were set afire and others badly
damaged yesterday when a single United
States-built
Martin Bomber attacked the airfield
at Misurata, in Eastern Libya. the British
announced today. Bengazi was raided again
on Friday night.

The New York Times, Sat., June 21, 1941:
The Moscow radio announced [Saturday] in a
broadcast heard here by C.B.S. that 1.5-million
children would leave large Russian cities "to
participate in scientific expeditions." C.B.S.
said there was nothing in the broadcast to
suggest evacuations.
Neither did the Moscow
radio mention foreign policy or defense in its
"review of today's press."
