Life and Death of Carpatho Ukraine

#1

Post by Askold » 17 Mar 2005, 22:02

March 15th was the 66 years anniversary of proclamation of Carpatho-Ukraine (Karpatska Ukraina). This is name of the autonomous Carpatho-Ukrainian state within Czechoslovakia in 1938–39. This small republic proclaimed its independece along with Slovakians, only to be brutally crushed by the invading Hungarian forces. The small militia force called Sitch, managed to put up a fierced resistance to much larger and beter equiped Hungarian forces. Disregarding the international law, captured prisoners of war were executed. Here's a small photo gallery to commemorate the event.

Some paradox is that in this far and unknown country were the largest fights of Czechoslovak army in 1938-39. Because Hungarians invaded without any warning and political ultimatum czechoslovak units still stationed there were forced to defend themselfs and country against horrible advantage.
For examle at the beginnig of fight there were usually some border platoon (marked SOS :) ) trying to slow down some battalion or even more then some czechoslovak tanks arrived and covered retreat. No chance
