The word means something like 'block to lay on a .....' (shell?)

Could this not be for the "auflegen" of a shell for a certain Leichtes Sturmgeschutz (L.St.)?
I could not find a reference to a model 37, but I am not an artillery specialist.

But the shape of the block reminds me of other wooden pieces I saw in the past for carrying shells. The tapered bore in the block should contain the tapered top of the shell. It also might be for putting on top of the shell as an aid before screwing in the fuze or setting the fuse.

Just my idea...

Hi again,

Thanks guys for the info.
The "problem" has now been solved.
It is as PropCollector suggested:
The tapered bore in the block should contain the tapered top of the shell.

Glad that I was right ;-)

Saw so many of these in my collector years that I wondered why nobody came on it.

Now, I still think that the problem is only partially solved.

What is the meaning of L.St.37.?
This should be a pointer towards what shell/gun it was used for. And I think that should be interesting to know.

Anybody?

Hans
