Mussolini with italian Generals in 1935
Mussolini with italian Generals in 1935
Besides General Alessandro Pirzio Biroli and Mussolini, can anyone recognize the others? Could one of them be Ugo Cavallero? I'm posting some close ups, could anybody translate the letter?
The caption said Mussolini saluting italian Generals in 1935 after the victory in Ethiopia.

I do not believe that the photo was taken in 1935 , apart from the fact that victory in Abyssiania was achieved only by end may 1936 , Mussolini looks too young , by 1935-1936 Mussolini did not wear civilian clothes anymore for official occasions , uniforms are those before the reform of 1933 .
I think picture was taken in the 20's also because if the general behind Mussolini was Cavallero ( looks like him ) , Cavallero for most of the 30's was not in the army , he had resigned in 1927 and was recalled only in november 1937 , and if the picture was taken after 1937 he would have weared the new uniform .
Also I cannot read well the text but cannot see any reference to victory in Abyssinia but only a reference to a " Fascist Spring "
Primavera fascista which might mean almost anything .
The writing is dated 1935 and written in Trieste and should have nothing to do with the Abyssinia campaign , the photo was sent to Pirzio Biroli from one soldier who served witrh him in the Bersaglieri corp .

Are you sure about 1935?
The handwriting on the picture is dated:
Trieste A. XII E.F. which means:
A = Anno = Year
XII = 12th
E.F. = Era Fascista = Fascist Era.
The first year of Era Fascista begun on Oct. 29, 1922 and ended on Oct 28, 1923.
So the XII year of Era fascista indicates a day between Oct. 29, 1933 and Oct. 28, 1934
Best regards

This is the handwriting on the picture, as far as I can tell:
al fascistissimo e baldo Bersagliere
S.E. Alessandro Pirzio Biroli
"forte tronco della nostra trionfante primavera fascista",
il suo affmo* e vecchio bersagliere Franco Pirillo (or Picillo, or Pizillo) già
del "Primo" di San Remo, detto ora
il "fascista Tirteo dalla gamba corta"
Trieste A. XII E.F.
* = the line written over this word stands as an indication of an abbrevation used and thus the written word AFFMO, non existing in Italian, must be read as AFFEZIONATISSIMO that is: dearest.
A translation of the above would be:
To the most fascist and bold (or daring) Bersagliere
His Excellency Alessandro Pirzio Biroli
"strong log of our triumphant fascist spring",
his dearest and old bersagliere Franco Pirillo once
of the "First", from San Remo, known today as
"the short legged fascist Tyrtaeus"
Trieste Year XII F.E.

Thank you too Eugen Pinak.
I would not take so seriously the information given by that site. I found out a short time ago that it has many errors so probably the information given that this pic was taken after the victory in Ethiopia is absolutely wrong.
So... if anybody can give additional information, I would really appreciate it. GLADIVM has given some already.
Best,
FANGIO

Sorry for "resurrecting" the topic after such a long time, but I couldn't help to notice the black band around Cavallero's left arm. What's the meaning of that? Maybe mourn?

Yes, a black arm-band was authorized by uniforms regulations as a mourn sign.Spirow Ewes wrote:Sorry for "resurrecting" the topic after such a long time, but I couldn't help to notice the black band around Cavallero's left arm. What's the meaning of that? Maybe mourn?
