My Visit to Kostrzyn and the Seelow Heights

#1

Post by Kim Sung » 07 Jul 2006, 15:12

On June 17, I met Musashi at Kostrzyn and visited the remains of the Old Fortress there and the Seelow Heights Museum. I post photos that I and Musashi took. Sorry for my belated post.

I had to get up early to keep a promise with Musashi. I got S-5 train to Lichtenberg station at Berlin.

Nice photos Kim

Did you take any from the Oder floodplain area in front of Seelowe Hohen? During my visit I travelled through that area and was struck by the lack of cover and the numerous drainage ditches that crossed it. Unfortunately weather conditions that day were not too good and my photos did not turn out well

Unfortunately, I couldn't take any photo of the Oder floodplain area because my digital camera had little power then. I didn't recharge it before I go to Poland. But, instead, I filmed the Oder floodplain area with my camcorder. I don't know how to get still photos from moving pictures. Anyway, I'll try to get still photos of the Oder floodplain area from my camcorder tape.

Nice photographs Kim Sung!!!

Your first photograph of the Berlin Charlottenburg S-Bahnhof - I used to live on the other side of the road on Stuttgarter Platz only a few hundred metres away :D

A very nice part of Berlin

There was a red light street just near the Charlottenburg station. I remember a name, the Banana club that was beside the homestay house where I was staying. It was just 100m from the station. :D

Two last batches of photos posted by Kim Sung were taken by me with my digital camera ;) I have them in greater resolution on my hard drive. The problem was, these objects were behind the glass, that reflected the flash of lamp and there was not enough light to take the photos without the lamp.

I forgot to post some important photos.

May I change 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae into the Seelow version?

'In Seelow Fields'

In Seelow fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Seelow fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Seelow fields.

They died a heroic death in Seelow fields.

Why is this Küstrin fortress so special? It is a fort from the 19e century.. Or was it used by the Germans as a strongpoint?
