Whilst searching in the archives at US NARA College Park recently I came across this oddity that may be of interest:

a Blitz radio message from BdS Rhein-Westmark, Wiesbaden, dated 19 Oct 1944 (signed SS-Stubaf RR Dr Schilling) to KdS Metz, Stapo Saarbrücken, Stapo Darmstadt, Stapo Fr./Main, Stapo Koblenz, Stapo Karlsruhe and IdS Stuttgart:

"Fluechtig ist: Sturmbannfuehrer SCHUSTER, Herbert, frueher Kommandeur der Pz. Jg. Art. der 17. SS-Pz.Gren.Div. entflohen am 18.10.44 mittags aus Untersuchungshaft in Ham (10 km. v. St. Avold).
Personalien: geb. 6.4.15. Wohnung: Pforzheim, Bismarchstr. 21. = =
Beschreibung: 1.80 gross, langschaedig, bekleidet mit Panzeruniform, Ledermantel, Feldmuetze ohne Kordel, EK I, Pz Sturmabzeichen, Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber, Zivilkleidung moeglich. = = Um Einleitung einer Grossfahndung wird ersucht. == Bei ergreiffen einliegerung in das naechste Wehrmachtsgefaengnis. == Erfolgsmeldung hierher Kripostellen don (sic) dort aus verstaendigen. ="

A written report by BdS Rhein-Westmark, Metz, to RKPA Berlin, dated 19 Oct 1944, added the details that SS-Stubaf Karl Herbert Schuster was born 6.4.15 in Pforzheim.

Very interesting. Schuster afterwards deserted to the Americans.

I did not find an interrogation of Schuster as I wasn't looking for one.

But if one exists it will probably be somewhere in US NARA College Park archives, most probably RG 498

You can see a photo of Schuster in some of Mark Yerger's books, for example on page 82 of his Images of the Waffen-SS (where Schuster is mistakenly given the name "Friedrich," probably due to confusion with Totenkopf Division officer Friedrich Schuster). The photos date from Himmler's April 16, 1944 visit to the GvB Division at Thours, France. That day the division was officially activated for duty, and received its cufftitle, but first Himmler watched training exercises by sub-units.
