Otto Liman von Sanders was my grandmother's (Marianne von Watzdorf-Kirsten) godfather and great uncle. Marianne was the daughter of Lukas Kirsten a major in the Imperial Army who fought in numerous battles including the Boxer Rebellion but was killed in 1917 on the French lines. Otto Liman von Sanders was my great great grandmother's (Gertrude Liman) brother. My family for generations hid the fact that the Liman's were Jewish. During WWII, they paid other family members with food and money not to turn them in. I suspect and am still researching that Otto was not born Liman but rather Liepmann or at least his father was born Liepmann. The name was shortened in order to hide the Jewish heritage. Kaiser Wilhelm II granted him German nobility by giving him the name von Sanders. von Sanders was his wife's maiden name. If anyone has any sources that says his father was indeed Isaac Liepmann, please post. Thank you

Thank you, Glenn. I have seen that before, but the link that is listed as another source is not working. I was excited when I first saw it.

Thanks,
Alex

Thank you for the welcomes. I have found proof that Liepmann was changed to Liman. It is documented in a book entitled The Berlin Jewish Community: Enlightenment, Family and Crisis, 1770-1830.
