Re: Unknown Tiger
Looks like the APG Tiger that was touring Germany some years back and now resides (at least I think it still does) with a private collector in the UK. The video Daimyo posted shows the tank in the UK, not sure where the picture was taken.dsketcher wrote:First off, no idea where pic came from. Does anyone have any information about this tiger?

Looks like the APG Tiger to me also - but you really got me excited that there might be another Tiger I out there. Seems the Tiger was sent to Germany for restoration and in turn went to the UK to have the work done. I know the APG now wants the tank back - anyone know the exact details on all this ?

I think this one is the Aberdeen Tiger, which was on loan to the Sinsheim Auto + Technik Museum and some other museums in Germany. It is said to be in Uk for restoration, and I also got info that this tank is currently on loan to Kevin Wheatcroft in order to produce a dozen of Tiger I replicas for shows or museums..
However, it is clearly the same tank for me. You can notice on the video and on the first photo the markings on the barrel. Here are one photo of the Tiger in the WTS Museum, Koblenz, and one in the Sinsheim Auto + Technik Museum :
I don't know if the cutouts on the hull and the turret were made during WW2, when the US Army tested this tank, or if it was done recently..

That Tiger came to Germany on loan in the late 1980s. It arrived together with two other ex-Aberdeen vehicles, one Panzer II and one Marder II. After some cosmetic restoration the Marder II and the Tiger I went on display to the Sinsheim Museum, the Tiger later to Koblenz and finally Munster.
The Panzer II was restored to running condition, this work was done mostly be volunteers, including an Afrika Korps veteran. It was official handed over to the Munster Museum, together with a restored Panzer III, in 1990 or 1991.
To my knowledge the Panzer II and the Marder II were loaned to Germany for a period of 99 years, the Tiger only for 10 years. At the end of this period it turned out that the American authorities, who had approved the export of these tanks from Aberdeen, had done that without the permission of their commanders and all tanks had to be returned.
I have seen a single photo of the Tiger I parked in front of one of the Wheatcroft buildings, but I have no knowledge about the fate of the Marder II and the Panzer II. None of them seems to have been returned to the US so far, but they all three seem to have left Germany.
A rather sad story for the Munster Museum, their volunteers and quite a number of German companies involved in the restoration of the Panzer II, somebody else will benefit from their work and money.
Munster has currently the Saumur Tiger I on display, as far as I know.

IIRC the Tiger I left Munster, Germany for England about 5 years ago. I got this picture from the late 1990ies taken at Munster. Got several others, including some details, but this is the best one.
