Kampfgruppe Peiper Losses in the Ardennes offensive

Postby hosenfield on 21 Jan 2007 05:57

KG peiper had:

1 mixed SS pzr BN
1 heavy Pzr Bn
1 Artillery batallion
1 SPW Panzergrenadier battalion.
1 Flak Battalion
Two Panzer Pioneer companies
1 Flak company
And one Infantry gun company

Total strength, I've seen 4,000 and 4,800. Which one is it? What fraction of these were Panzergrenadier?

What was the composition of the 84th Flak company?

Was the Flak company made of Ostwind and Wirblelwinds?

What was the total panzergrenadier strength of his two pioneer companies and his SPW battalion?

Finally, what is his losses after the Stavelot Breakout? He supposedly broke out with 770, and one source lists his losses as 2,000 men. Since Werner's mixed Panzer Battalion was evacuated beforehand, what units were left with Peiper on his last day in Stavelot?

Also there is mention of him attached a Fallschirmjager company into the kampfgruppe. Was this unit 800 strong? Did it stay with KG peiper all the way or did it just accompany the tigers?

thanks very much,

Best,

A.
