Italian Air Force Geneerals

#1

Post by Lornito Uriarte Mahinay Jr. » 06 Feb 2007, 21:49

One site mentioned that 11 Italian Air Force generals died during the course of the Second World War. I can named only three:

Marshal Italo Balbo
Brigadier General Stefano Cagna
Brigadier General Pezzi

Can anyone help me to identify the others and give their dates and places of deaths. Please let me know.

Best Regards
Baron

il generale della RegiaAeronautica Stefano Cagna abbattuto mentre guidava il suo stormo aerosiluranti all’attacco di due portaerei inglesi il 31 luglio 1940.

Air Force General Stefano Cagna was shot down while leading his torpedo group in the attack on two British aircraft carriers, 31 July 1940.

Apparently this was an attack on Force H south of the Baleares which conducted Operation HURRY. His plane was the only one lost.

So I guess he was promoted to Generale di Brigata Aerea posthumously. Correct?

Not sure - he succeeded Balbo as commander in Libya according to the first site I linked. Here is a picture of him with Balbo, no idea who is who, and what the ranks are.

Sorry, Balbo is not in this picture.

Both of them are Generali di Brigata Aerea.

I would not know Balbo from a Golden Retriever. :)

The problem with finding out anything about Cagna is that a current Italian Air Force Stormo is named after him (15th, at Pratica di Mare), and that many cities have streets named after him.

So you get lots of pointless hits.

Here is his picture. If he is one of the guys on the other picture, that would solve the question.

Perfect... I've just found the subtitle for that picture.

The men are Gen. Aldo Urbani (left) and Gen. Stefano Cagna (right).

Ah well, there you go then. Not bad for a Brigadier General to lead his force in the attack. No wonder they hold him in high honour.

He also participated in the Atlantic crossing with Balbo.

All the best
