Photo of alleged UPA crime - a falsification

New research done by Polish historians finds that the infamous photo of children allegibly killed by UPA has nothing to do with UPA. Here is translation from Polish newspaper Rzechpospolita. In few lines: the photo of crucified children which was widely used in anti-UPA publications has nothing to do with UPA. The photo was first used in the 90's but has nothing to do with Poland. These are gypsy chilndren murdered by their insane mother in 1923. The original photos were first published in Psychiatric Annualy in 1928 and later in 1948. In the 90's the photo was "pinched" to tarnish the Ukrainians.

The online translator is not as good as I expected it to be, but here it is anyways:

FAKE DESCRIPTION OF A REAL CRIME

Its not knows how and when started to publish a false description of this crime as proof of crimes against Poles in 1943. The next people in chain who used this photo unknowinly, acted in good faith.

We desire to apologize readers on admission (preamble; enter) for severe illustrations for this article. Such photos should not appear in press, so, not only, in order to shock readers and contribute to brutalization enclosing (enclose with) we ikonosfery, and also from estimate for introduced (presented) on them innocent donations of (victims of) awful crimes. We affix it (them), our other capabilities of documentary evidences of theses not seeing, which (who) concern for important problem allude recent message (knowledge) - splice and from before over semi century (age) dramatic events. Several weeks ago message (knowledge) has appeared in media about plans of erect in (to) center of new warsaw of monument. Polish-wide committee of structure of monument of donation of (victim of) genocide performed by OUN project of authorship of known artist of sculptor of indispensable marian has presented on polish population of eastern (eastern) verge at this opening - UPA. The monument presents stylized tree, on which, bodies of four children are attached . Photo was placed as a prototype of this earth-shattering image publications, issued in an album about genoside commited by UPA against Polish nation. Photographic documentation lived ", we present which (who) photo near ( and ). These publications serve place and date of introduced (presented) crime too teach plan of structure of monument - end 1943 , but differentiated reactions have excited earth-shattering indispensable project more else, among others, letter of (list of) protest undersigned has hit for advice of (council of) warsaw by over 100 artists, scientists and politicians, they ascertain in which (who), that severe form does not be as (does not serve) commemorating of donation (victim) well < goods (right) > monumentu and polish -ukrainian reconciliation. Project of monument of representative body of donation of (victim of) cruel crime is really earth-shattering and as such can wake up argumentations. However, making is severe in literalness for stage from photo false. And so, photo ascertain , which (who) has become inspiration for sculptor, has common nothing with (from) by " donation (victim) genocide performed OUN on polish population of eastern (eastern) verge - " UPA. Children were not presented poles on it, murderer did not have they (their) with (from) nicwspólnego OUN and UPA and there was not ukrainian in whole, but crime during antipolish share (action) in (to) 1943 from 1923 year drama not follow (step) affirm so UPA, as we own undeniable proofs, that photo allude - prototype project monument other event presents - completely. It had place in night with (from) 11 on 12 december 1923 , four victims - gypsy children, but possessed mother was murderer , 32 -years old M.D. Event is described in issued work in (to) 1928 print in detail ( but in contemporary press surely too ). We have met these informations and photo eats in other documenting, later (late) publication, which (who) cited on article from year 1928. Both texts are publications from range of judicial medicine. It in (to) first article -psychiatric " psychosis judicial " szałowo-posępnicza kazuistyce, it was placed in (to) with (from) 1928 author " age group (year-book) psychiatric " Witold Łuniewski, many years director of plant (bet) in (to) Tworkach. Second (other) publication it for students " textbook medicine judicial and it issue physicians in (to) 1948 by " Wiktora Grzywo-Dąbrowskiego, professor of warsaw university and editorial committee member " age group (year-book) psychiatric ". It fact exactly, that mother was murderer of child , it has drawn attention teach . Unfortunate woman has killed four children in act of desperation after apprehension of husband and decomposition of gypsy group, it lived in which (who) until now, in conviction, that it threatens memorial < they (their) > death hunger niechybna. Next day has entered on police. It has been placed from errand of court (trial) in psychiatric plant (bet), where it ascertain psychosis at she (it) " " szałowo-posępniczą, we would say about heavy case of (accidentally of) depression today surely. As it writes Łuniewski, action was psychopathological attempt of (test of) effecting of expanded suicide ", it has not drove (has not cause) which (who) ill to the end ". Both mentioned publications include (reach; make) photos (photographers) from place of crime. Photo place in (to) " textbook medicine judicial ", we have meant which (who) number II. It is not as photo sight such number just reader I., that photo differs and there is mirror reflection . Photo placed has has become in work Łuniewskiego, we have meant which (who) number III, there is other photo no doubt, < unmistakable > it presents same stage -, but somewhat other part affirm photographed with (from). It image of (offense of) crime has been photographed by investigating office " taking over (concern) grimness (danger) ", it writes Łuniewski, and several photos execute from different prospects surely. Possible, that in judicial archives or photos of these stages have behaved police other else. Besides, photo hand and it differs from oblique bright (plain) lines remaining < survivor >, which (who) several commentator has taken for prickly wire erroneously. There are trails surely primary (original) photo zgięć or on negative zarysowań. On traces of legends of photos as it has has become , that photo of donation of (victim of) possessed mother regard with (from) 1923 as presentation of polish donation (victim) UPA, hand it behind (for) their icons then? Answers have on this question searching for, we have hit on several paths, partially consistent, partially divergent. Earliest recovered (turned up) publication eats it on 1943 in wroclaw on boundaries issue (seem) letter dating photo " ". Photo appears in (to) its (his) number 3 of 1993 adjusted description as " polish children tormented and by (squad of) ukrainian insurgent army in region of village murder Kozowa, in (to) woj. tarnopolskim, taken from collection of Dr. Stanisław Krzaklewski. Alexander places wroclaw in work for poles on south-east lands (earth) information of photo II polish republic 2002 " attitude (relation) " ( ) maximally Korman UPA and crime, it has to present which (who). It affirms, that photo dates from village Kozowa or Łozowa, pow. Tarnopol, From december surely 1943 or 1944 , where from survivor group has supplied it (them) from carnage of pole on conspiracy outpost 14. On suburbs of lvov regiment AK. There in (to) hand on which (who) rate hit (occur) ( appoint (call; cite) ) Władysława Załogowicza, which (who) has transferred many lat (summer; year) later it (them) Krzaklewskiemu, but it author. It writes too, that many such have done from children " " upowcy wianuszków, it eats for trees in boulevard przybijając, they have called which (who) for " expensive (dear) < way > ukraine " samostijnej. We learn surname of commander of presumable department (squad) for carnage even responsible UPA and other details of (particularities of) crimes. Photo places to issued year said album later already twice Korman, with information again, that one of tree at way to in (to) introduce (present) " ukraine " say samostijnej tarnopolskim. Then in (to) over 1100 part volume .h counting Komańskiego and Sz. We read hatchets about genocide in province wroclaw 2004 ( ) tarnopolskim, that photo dates from package st. Krzaklewskiego, but german photographer has executed it (them) in (to) village military < military > Kozówka, pow. Brzeżany, In november 1943 though this work has rich base źródłową and extended scientific apparatus, it does not serve, it attribute base on that for village this stage Kozówka. They let's add, that lat (summer; year) from several photo and it appears in different publications and in internet ( e.g. in (to) ) Wikipedii, but it grows it to more new professed details of (particularities of) crimes description . Alexander Korman and they do not live already Stanisław Krzaklewski, however, it has managed to communicate you hatchets , Komańskim and Załogowiczem. Two first affirm accordingly, that photo, they have received which (who) from dr. Krzaklewskiego, it dated from its (his) father, then which (who) has obtained her (it) from german officer in (to) Brzeżanach. However, we have informed from Załogowicza, that it has transferred photo Krzaklewskiemu, but it has obtained her (it) summer (year) 40 near the end. From certain family, which (who) dated from regions of villages Kozowa, but it has has taken up residence after war in (to) Głuchołazach. Therefore, we have two histories of different photos, so, at least one is false. However, we do not affirm, that these rates were consciously kłamliwe. On the contrary, we judge, that persons, which (who) generalized described photo false, unaware acted it, in good faith. Our respondents were last link of longest chain. It isn't known, who will stuff but when photo begin introducing (presenting) as proof of crime on poles with (from) 1943 , next persons copied in chain that only already. Even author ( author? It does not belong to suspect about lie ) it false interpretation at once ( though it is not possible to exclude it ). Could not know, where from photo dates, and joint it (them) with some (certain) history zasłyszaną. Many people saw horrible stages from south-east verges in this time II polish republic so, that one horror photo can seem for they else obvious added < addition > memorial < they (their) >. Defenders of memory have and it is necessary to underline spokesmen of truths, that they are presented false proof of crime committed beside photo on poles by UPA, it is many others reliable (believable) proofs of these crimes sufficiently documents and polish rate, ukrainian if (or) scare german on unprotected civilians of different sex describing thousand murder and century (age), present collective hiding remains donation (victim) mogił, as well as they scare photos plane < equal > as image of (offense of) hung child. They live else, though with each year more less, spectators of carnages and atrocities. Behavior and we owe assembly many such proof from borderland environments researchers of amateurs, it made in sense of mission which (who), from duty of memory, despite great barriers. There was lat of (summer of; year of) communist government by over forty theme taboo; they did not lead appropriate institutions research and investigation neither they assembled (collect) documentation. Witness wymierali, many kept silent from fear about life and close, passage of time covered up memory. Cases of (accidentally of) installation of historians of erroneous amateurs were in these inevitable (unavoidable) conditions. Academic research have been started only recently relatively, it is used in (to) which (who) from differentiated base źródłowej. New have appeared due to it, it present supplied documentary evidence for elaboration firmly systematically and circumstances in detail, character and scale of event, like monumental work of ewa and about genocide on Władysława Siemaszków Wołyniu or pried analyses of gregory of historic hoes. They show, that reflection and method of historian, though from nature critical, it does not prevent, but it helps with animating and encouragement of memory. So, sadness and poisonous onsets wake up we on these historians zgorszenie, which (who) to name of truth and they step up to certain pound opinion according to rules of professions (contests) critically, emotive courts (trials) and unsupplied documentary evidence for affirmations. For historian on question XX answer w., if (or) remember and commemorate these events and donations (victims) , it is obvious estimate belongs memorial < they (their) > and memory. Nation it community of memory and oblivion, but we do not judge, in order to it helped reconciliation between people " politician (politics; policy) oblivion " and nations. It belongs to remember important events from past and commemorate, even if there is hard and painful. Question opened and problem is how (as) it not easy, we have will stuff , that case of (accidentally of) false monument will remind of requirement of cooperation on this field of defender of memory and spokesmen of truths.

I). Publikacje te podają też miejsce i czas przedstawianej zbrodni - koniec 1943 r.
(a zapewne też w ówczesnej prasie).
Obydwie wymienione publikacje zawierają fotografie z miejsca zbrodni. W "Podręczniku medycyny sądowej" zamieszczono zdjęcie, które oznaczyliśmy nr. II.
Pisze też, że upowcy poczynili wiele takich "wianuszków" z dzieci, przybijając je do drzew w alei, którą nazwali "drogą do samostijnej Ukrainy".
Z kolei w liczącym ponad 1100 stron tomie H. Komańskiego i Sz.
Obrońcy pamięci i rzecznicy prawdy
Zachowanie i zgromadzenie wielu takich dowodów zawdzięczamy badaczom amatorom ze środowisk kresowych, którzy czynili to w poczuciu misji, z obowiązku pamięci, pomimo wielkich przeszkód.
Dlatego smutek i zgorszenie budzą w nas jadowite napaści na tych historyków, którzy w imię prawdy i zgodnie z regułami swego zawodu podchodzą krytycznie do pewnych utartych opinii, emocjonalnych sądów i nieudokumentowanych twierdzeń.

When I read this article in “Rzeczpospolita” I accepted the fact, that this crime was not committed by Ukrainians with relief. These children suffered before their death, but the fact that they were killed by insane women is better (maybe it sounds strange) acceptable than the fact that they were killed by mentally health people overwhelmed by ill nationalistic ideas. But after it came the conclusion, what does it change? The fact of massacres committed on polish civilians is based not on this single photo only. It is perfectly described by the title of article you translated: FAKE DESCRIPTION OF A REAL CRIME. The tragedy of Wołyń is based mostly on relations, reports made by Home Army, a few other photos (with children too, but less detailed) and now there is another source of information: exhumations of mass graves. In your post you wrote that “In the 90's the photo was "pinched" to tarnish the Ukrainians”. – it is not right, many people who were witnesses of crimes or lost relatives bear grudge against Ukrainians, or more precisely against UPA, but this photo was used to depicts rather martyrdom of civilians, including children killed by fanatics not by Ukrainians. In polish memories it is usually UPA what is accused for massacres, not ordinary Ukrainians, why? Simply because before the war, according to relations I read, there weren’t usually conflicts between ordinary people. The conflicts were borne by politicians, both Polish and Ukrainian. During the war there were many cases when Ukrainians helped their polish neighbors, and I hope a vice versa, even it was dangerous. So many Poles couldn’t not believe that their neighbors, without impulse from any centralized organization could one day decide to clear Ukraine from “strangers”.
In conclusion, this photo was not used to “crucify” Ukrainians, unless UPA.
It is a pity you did not translate the article by your own, I am aware that my English is a little bit harsh but translation by online translator is horrible, maybe any polish reader could translate it properly.

The mystery of this photo, in fact is not solved completely. As it was written in the article, nobody knows how it happened that this photo was alleged to UPA’s crimes. It is quite possible that someone, unaware of real history of the photo, finding it, associated it with real crimes and alleged it to UPA. Unfortunately, people who may say a word about it are dead. No matter what intension had the person who used this photo for the first time, there are clear intensions of polish historians to find the truth. I hope that historians in all countries will have the courage to do the same, even the truth about any details of their own history maybe shocking.

RG:
In conclusion, this photo was not used to “crucify” Ukrainians, unless UPA.

- Judging by popularity of this photo in anti-UPA books and how in EVERY discussion on UPA someone sticks it it, I'd say it was.

The mystery of this photo, in fact is not solved completely. As it was written in the article, nobody knows how it happened that this photo was alleged to UPA’s crimes.

- The articles clearly states the first time this photo was used. Whoever used it (how about Dr. Stanisław Krzaklewski? ;) had a clear intent on doing so. Actually its not the only fact of such incident. There is another photo of a tortured men used in such publications - the original photo was that of a Ukrainian men tortured by the Poles during the Pacification. In any case, am glad this thing with childrent was solved, I always doubted its origins from day one.

In conclusion, this photo was not used to “crucify” Ukrainians, unless UPA.

- Judging by popularity of this photo in anti-UPA books and how in EVERY discussion on UPA someone sticks it it, I'd say it was.

Exactly, it was used to depict UPA's crimes, not all Ukrainians in general as you wrote in your post. Are you surprised that someone, who believed in authenticity of this picture used it? This photo is horrible, even now when we know who were these children in real, and the first feeling is pity to these children, not hate to the entire nation.

Sorry Askold, but I was reading the original, polish version of the earticle, not (do not take it personally) quasi English and fact, there is clearly stated that it was taken from the collection of Dr Krzaklewski, but how he received it? There are two teories, the first that he received it from german officer (if it is the truth, maybe it was German provocation), the second that he received it from Załogowicz who received it from any family from eastern Galicia. So, there are two ways how photos reached Krzaklewski’s collection:
1) German officer-dr Krzaklewski’s father – dr Krzaklewski
2) Unknown polish family – Załogowicz – dr Krzaklewski
Unfortunatelly, dr Krzaklewski is dead and can not confirm which version is right. In both versions there are a few links of a long chain, chain, which had to be hidden for 40 years, since for communistic authorities all information on Poles in the former polish territories were risky since if they said something about massacre in Wołyń, they should say about 27th AK division and its fate so officially Wołyń did not exist. In the meantime people were dying and when finally it was allowed to talk about it nobody even suspect it was a fake, so your opinion that it was premedited fake is substantiated just like this photo’s story was substantiated.
I did not see the picture you described, it would be interesting to solve its history too, if it was Ukrainan tortured by Poles as you say you, Ukrainians should be interested to prove it, isn’t it?

You doubted… Intuition or prejuduce?

RG:

1) German officer-dr Krzaklewski’s father – dr Krzaklewski
2) Unknown polish family – Załogowicz – dr Krzaklewski

- Or how about 3 - Dr. Krzaklewski cut out the photo from the medical journal? In any case, I don't feel like arguing about his intentions.

- It was from a Ukrainian newspaper and I could not find Ukrainian English translator. If you can read in Ukrainian I'll drop you a link.

I will try to translate, sorry for imperfections,

I am glad of interest in my and my professor's publication. If you have got any doubts you may write to me, but in polish only, since my English for historical [discussions] is insufficient. I would like to emphasize that nobody of authors [of this article] (of us) do not deny crimes committed by UPA on territories inhabited by Poles and that these crimes were more cruel than anything else, including this what was happening in Korea in 1950. In my opinion, crimes identical as these depicted in the photo are possible and I am not surprised that, even though it was false, it fits to the “style” of OUN-UPA.

From my side (RG):

I may try to translate possible questions to Ms Rutkowska. Of course, do not expect I will do it at once and as you can read my English is not perfect, but I will try.

To Ms Rutkowska:

You are right, there is such possibility that someone (maybe Krzklewski) did it. I did not mention this possibility because you assumed it as unquestionable so it was not necessary to add it to the list. By the way, these photos were not taken directly from the publications mentioned in the article in “Rzeczpospolita”, look carefully – these photos depict the same event but are a little bit different (are taken from different angle). It does not mean that your suggestion is completely wrong, such photo was probably used in many other publications and newspapers. But it is quite improbable that it was taken from ordinary newspaper and even professional publication, the quality is too high. I have asked Ms Rutkowski if she found exactly the same photo.

- In any case, I don't feel like arguing about his intentions.

Glad to hear, before you wrote:

I do not read Ukrainian, but I may try to translate it, so do not hesitate to send me that link.

Here is the link. Regarding that photo - it actually says the innocent men was killed by Soviet partizans, but the immage was later used by Polish publications portraying the victum as a Pole.

Thanks for the link.

I asked my workmate who speak a little bit Ukrainian to translate it. If translation is correct the text says that the picture of young Ukrainian boy (Iwan) killed by red guerillas was published in book by Nikol Lebied in 1946 which now is used in polish historiography.
I think that it would be advisable to explain situation, but this text does not give examples in which polish publication it is used. I do not know all documents related to Wolyn tragedy but I can not remember a photo of a single boy/young man killed with a bayonet, I remember a photo of three children, one of them looks like his bowels are ripped out.
Maybe the author of the article could point out the examples? Could you ask him and inform it, I will try then to explain it on polish side.

I actually seen this photo, its quite disturbing. Can't remember which book used it as another fake crime but most likely, one of those bs works by E. Pruss.
