In Madrid/Spain you can see one of these Huge Mercedes Cars. Not many were produced and one of them was sent as a gift by Hitler to Franco.

Hitler's cars

#4

Post by Ovidius » 10 Apr 2002, 23:29

Adolf Hitler, as Führer and Chancellor of Germany, had a fleet of cars alloted for his trips.

During the late 1920s(after his release from prison), he owned, according to some sources, a Mercedes-Benz 460 Nürburg. The vast majority of the people seem to be fully convinced that he never had a driver's license and never drove himself, but David Irving had tracked down an insurance ticket which specifies that the insurance company was to cover the damage of the car after a bump "by the fault of Adolf Hitler", therefore he was at the wheel. I'll search and post the exact URL, in the meatime check

http://www.fpp.co.uk

After his election, Hitler travelled frequently in various official cars inherited from the "old regime", and appeared at parades in heavy all-terrain open tourers, Mercedes-Benz G3 and G4.

The top model of Hitler's favorite marque, Mercedes-Benz, was the 770K type. The "second generation" of this car(1938-1941), chassis code W150, was the largest car built up to that time in Europe, surpassing even the giant Bugatti Royale.

http://www.autogallery.org.ru/mb770150.htm

At least two of these cars, built in 1939, a closed limousine and an open tourer, had been part of Hitler's fleet. By extensive modification, they can be considered an entirely new type(W150 II). The adoption of a second supercharger raised the power of the engine to 400 bhp at 3600 rpm, to carry the huge weight of the armored bodyshell(4.78 tonnes). The armored shell had 18mm of armor on the sides, armored windows of 43mm thick, and multi-chambered tyres to allow running after being punctured by bullets.

Both cars had been captured by General Leclerc's 2eme Division Blindee of the Free French Forces, on March 7, 1945, at Berchtesgaden.

The open tourer is since 1969 in the Musée de la Rochetaillée sur Saone near Lyon. I'll try to find some online pictures to post.

Ovidius

PS The fuel tank of the armored car held 300 liters. Try to imagine the fuel consumption.

I see that while I was writing down my message, MaPen has posted the picture of the Mercedes-Benz W150 II Open Tourer in the Musée de la Rochetaillée sur Saone. Thanks.

Great subject. I have wanted a Hitler 770K for ever. If any of you know Ralph Engelstad, he is the last one that I know of to own Hitler's 1939 Großer Mercedes Benz 770K. He also owns a Heinrich Himmler Mercedes Benz. The Canadian War Museum owns a Hitler Mercedes Limo as well.

Ovidius, here is the exact link that you were speaking of.

Here is a link to the Canadians that I spoke of earlier. They should not be the owners of this car.

The Mercedes-Benz acquired in 1933 was the old type of Grosser Mercedes type 770K(chassis code W 07), with an earlier version of the 7.7 litre engine and rigid-axle suspension.

This huge car had been built in just 117 examples, from which some ended up in the garages of royalty. The Imperial House of Japan bought two of them, Kaiser Wilhelm II(living in exile in Holland) another example.

Although very luxurious, the old(1930-1938) 770K was much less refined than the newer(1938-1941) version.

Hitler's fleet also included one of the 630 pre-production Volkswagens built in 1939 for road testing. The car(chassis number 38/31 with convertible Cabriolet body) was a gift received by Hitler on april 20, 1939, for his 50th birthday. Today the car is in custody of the Volkswagen factory.

I always understood several surviving cars are attributed to AH, including one sold here years ago at a well known (and expensive) collector car auction. While in Prague I was told the car Heydrich was attacked in was recently bought and exported by someone in the UK. The one I saw I recalled most its speed (for size) and the massive thick bullet proof windows.

It always surprised me that he stood up in an opened top car. seems it would have been easy would it have been for a Brit agent to take him out.

Magnificent automobiles indeed.

Image

First generation 117 built, second generation 88.
The armoured version weighed almost 5 tonnes and consumed 40 litres / 100 km.

When speaking of Volkswagen I remember reading that Hitler had himself chauffeured back in a Volkswagen from walks to Mooslahnerkopf tea-house in the Obersalzberg area. What kind of VW could that have been?

And yes Hitler stood up in his car at many occasions making himself an easy target for an shooter, I guess he liked the danger he presented himself to.

Indeed. In the 1939 car, Hitler's seat was 13cm higher, so even when seated his head would be above the windscreen and he would be more easily seen by the public.

He did not especialy like the danger(a man who had fought in WWI knew how much the life and especially his own life does worth) but a leader has to do even things he don't like. For example, Hitler hated to fly in an airplane, but this was his favorite mean of transportation, because it was fast. He also didn't know how to swim and feared to sail on a ship, but he still sailed during the take-over of Memel.
When speaking of Volkswagen I remember reading that Hitler had himself chauffeured back in a Volkswagen from walks to Mooslahnerkopf tea-house in the Obersalzberg area. What kind of VW could that have been?
It must have been the VW Cabriolet shown above. There was a news journal showing Hitler at a rally, in the back seat of the VW, together with three officers.

During the 1939-1940 war with France, Hitler intended to make his victory parade in a Bugatti Type 41 Royale(one of the examples was in Paris, to be re-bodied at the Henri Binder workshop), which was going to be a supplementary humiliation for the French. When the Germans entered Paris and marched under the Arc de Triomphe, the French Resistance had taken the car and lowered it in the Paris sewers, to avaoid capture by the Germans.
