What was Fritz Klingenbergs final rank?
According to http://www.dasreich.ca, he was an SS-Oberführer.
According to http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-45.de, his final rank was SS-Standartenführer.

Re: Fritz Klingenberg
Confusing.
Fritz Klingenberg is referred to as SS-Oberführer - so to speak - all over the internet, amongst other places here:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 37&start=0
On this site he is referred to as SS-Standartenführer
http://www.frontkjemper.info/show_person.php?P_ID=260
Then, Wikipedia refers to him thus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Klingenberg
The last rank on the list is SS-Standartenführer (appointed 21.12.1944). But in the text above he is referred to as SS-Oberführer.
Was he appointed SS-Oberführer at one point just because of his command of the Götz von Berlichingen-division?
Pictures would help; pictures I found was either (1) the known picture (signed) as RKT and Hauptsturmführer, or (2) with his collars hidden.
Regards

Veit Scherzer ("Ritterkreuzträger 1939–1945"), Fellgiebel ("Elite of the Reich"), Krätschmer ("Die Ritterkreuzträger der Waffen-SS"), and John P. Moore ("Führerliste der Waffen-SS") all have Klingenberg’s final rank as SS-Oberführer.

Re: Fritz Klingenberg
The Kriegstagebuch of the 17.SS-Pz.Gren.Div. "Götz von Berlichingen" edited by M. Wind and H. Günther, includes a report sent on 26.03.45 by the divisional Ia to the Gen.Kdo. XIII.SS-A.K. with the details of the death of Divisional Commander SS-Standartenführer Klingenberg on 23.03.45. The Diary also contains the Divisions-Tagesbefehl issued on 26.03.45 and signed by the Ia too, notifying the divisional units the death of SS-Standartenführer Klingenberg.
So he held the rank of SS-Standartenführer when KIA. If he was ever promoted to SS-Oberführer it was a posthumous promotion.
