Italian Navy Recruitment Postcard

#1

Post by JLEES » 08 Feb 2003, 23:38

Hello,
I picked up a 1933 Italian Navy recruitment postcard. The card depicts two ships side-by-side on the high seas. The ships look like they’re an unidentified destroyer on the left and a Zara class (either the Pola, Zara or Gorizia laid down between 1929-31) on the right.

The one card says:

“Regia Marina - Corpo Reale Equipaggi - Arruolamenti Volontari a premio per l'anno 1933. 1800 posti nelle varie categorie del C.R.E.M. per I Nati nel 1913 - 1914 - 1915 - 1916 chiedere i programmi di arruolamento alle Capitanerie di Porto - Prefetture - Municipi - Distretti Militari - Autorità Militari Marittime Comandi di Legione M.V.S.N. - Sezioni dell'Unione Marinara e delle laga Navale - Associazione fre Sottufficiali R. Marina a riposo in Napoli e Comando Superiore dei C.R.E.M. (La Spezia).”

I’ve translated this as “Roval Navy - Real body Crews - Voluntary Enlistment for the prize of 1933. 1800 places in the varied categories of the C. R. E. M. for the Native in 1913 - 1914 - 1915 - 1916, ask the programs of enlistment at the Captain of Port - Prefecture - Town Halls - Military Districts - Authority Military Maritime Orders of Legion M. V. S. N. - Sections of the Seafaring Union and of the Naval Sea - Association of Non-Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy located in Naples and Superior Command of the C. R. E. M. (The Spezia).” Can anyone translate this better in English?

What does C.R.E.M. mean? Does anyone have any idea what types of prises were awarded for joining in 1933?

Thanks,
James

Comando (HQ)
Regal ( Royal)
Esercito e (ARMY)
Marina (FLEET)
note that there is no aviation:the RA (Regia Aeronautica) was established in the same year. There fore during 1934 CREM was superseeded.

gabriel,
Thanks for the translation. So C.R.E.M. means, Comando (HQ), Regal ( Royal), Esercito e (ARMY), Marina (FLEET). Is that correct?

Is this translation correct: "Royal Navy - ship crews - Voluntary Enlistment for the bonus of 1933. 1800 places in the varied categories of the C. R. E. M. (Command, Royal, Army aviation, Fleet) for the citizens of the class of 1913 - 1914 - 1915 - 1916, ask about the programs of enlistment at the Captain of Port - Prefecture - Town Halls - Military Districts - Authority Military Maritime Orders of Legion M. V. S. N. - Sections of the Seafaring Union and of the Naval Sea - Association of Non-Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy located in Naples and Superior Command of the C. R. E. M. (The Spezia)."

Also any idea what type of class of ship the destroyer belongs too.

Thanks,
James

gabriel,
What was the CREM called after the RA was added in 1934?

mmm....sorry but I think gabriel is wrong. AFAIK C.R.E.M. should mean Corpo Regi Equipaggi Marittimi (Corps of Royal Maritime Crews) and grouped the Navy personnel serving aboard military ships (overall specialist, engine, guns, etc.) and has no connection with army or other armed forces. Its actual name should be C.E.M.M. (Corps of Military Maritime Crews).
BTW Regia Aeronautica had been formed in 1923 so it was just a reality by ten years in 1933.

I'd traslate the postcard so:
Royal Navy - Royal Crew Corps- Volunteer enlisting at prize for year 1933. 1800 vacancies in C.R.E.M. categories for born in 1913-1914-1915-1916 Ask for enrolement programs to Harbour Commands- Prefectures- Town Halls - Military districts - Maritime Naval Autorities - MVSN legion commands - sections of Sailor Union and of Naval League - retired Navy NCO association in Naples and C.R.E.M. Upper Command in La Spezia

Late, in my opinion, the destroyer is a "Tarigo" class flottilia leader
ciao

Lupo,
Many thanks for the kind translation. Do you know when Mussolini began expanding the Italian Navy? Was it around the time of the card's printing in 1933?
Thanks,
James
