Heinrich Graf von Matuschka

#1

Post by lohengrin » 28 Jun 2010, 15:15

I was wondering if anyone has any information on WW2 LW officer (and a decorated pilot) Heinrich Graf von Matuschka - any relation to Michael Graf von Matuschka who was one of the July 20 conspirators?

Many thanks,
Clara

Hello Clara!

I do not know how closely they were related but there was also a Siegfried Graf von Matuschka, who received the DKiG on 23.12.1943 as an Oberleutnant in the I./JG 54.

1) wikipedia gives the death of Hartmut on 25-11-1944 and his DKiG on 12-09-1944
2) it says also that he had a brother in the LW (KIA in 1943) Heinrich ?
3) Heinrich and Hartmut were no children of Michael, whose sons were born in 1931, 1932 and 1934

Revisiting yet another old topic, as I was just reviewing my Matuschka notes for another thread.

Not sure where the name Heinrich came from, but the Luftwaffe ace Siegfried, 28.6.1917-16.4.1943, and the U-Boot commander Harmut, 29.12.1914-16.1.1945, were brothers. They had another two brothers. One, Friedhelm, 23.3.1913-4.7.1979, was a Heer Major. The other was Volkhart, born 9.1.1921. No idea about his service, but based on his age probably a Leutnant/Oberleutnant. Their father's name was Heinrich. He was an Oberst in the Reichswehr/Wehrmacht, formerly in the 1.Garde-Regiment zu Fuss, and died in 1935. Their grandfather Guido Johannes was a Generalmajor a.D., who also died in 1935 (11 days before his son).

Michael, the July 20 conspirator, was a third cousin. Michael's great-grandfather Viktor was half-brother to Siegfried's and Harmut's great-grandfather Otto. Michael's older brother Raphael, 26.9.1887-15.6.1945, was a Heer Oberst and died in Auschwitz as a Soviet POW.

The only military-age Heinrich Graf von Matuschka during World War II was an even-more distant cousin, Heinrich Maria Rudolf Günther Friedrich, 2.4.1909-24.1.1945. I have nothing on military service for him, but he died in Saigon, French Indochina of all places.

Regards,
Dave
