Hello Andris, I have some information for you. Gen Woon, John BlAxall, was born on Feb 24, 1856, not 1855. His date of death is Aug 29, 1938. He was promoted to MG in 1905, and to LTG in 1911. I have no dates for when he took over command of the 2 Indian divisions. Tomorrow I'll work on the other 2 chaps you were asking about. Stay cool , Harry

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the additional information about the other two generals.

I was wondering about the John BlaxAll Woon versus BlaxEll issue. Whos' Who 1907 indeed shows him as Blaxall, but the Edinburgh Gazette (23 June 1911 issue, http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issu ... 7/page.pdf) and Hart's Annual Army List (e.g. 1899 issue, page 49) show him as Blaxell.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, and best wishes,

Andris

Hi AJK, I guess you have a choice of spelling the name. I have no idea since 2 normally excellent sources cannot agree. Knowing how accurate military typists are, I would go with the Who's Who spelling. For example, on my old army ID card, my number is wrong. Shows how accurate the military can sometimes be. Best regards to you and your lovely wife. Harry

1912: Promoted to Lieutenant-General
1917: Promoted to General
1919: Retired

General Sir Henry Bulckley Burlton Watkis (Jun 4 1860 - May 5 1931)
1906: Promoted to Temporary Brigadier-General
1906- ?: Deputy Adjutant-General Western Command, India

General Sir John Blaxall Woon (Feb 24 1856 - Aug 29 1938)
1903: Promoted to Temporary Brigadier-General
1903: Colonel on Staff ?, India
1903: District Officer Commanding Bundelkhand District, India
1904 (or 1903): District Officer Commanding Kohat District, India

1919: Retired

The information is based upon London Gazette, The Times, Who's Who 1897-1996 and Whitaker's peerage, baronetage, knightage, and companionage.

Btw. Brigadier-Generals were by nature Temporary.
