Both vehicles were designed as reconnaissance vehicles based on standard Adler 4x4 passenger car chassis mounted with lightly armored open top body. Maschinengewehrkraftwagen (Kfz.13) was armed with single machine gun mounted behind the protective shield. Funkkraftwagen (Kfz.14) was fitted with long range radio equipment and frame antenna and served as wireless radio car. Both were issued to Aufklarungs (reconnaissance) detachments from 1932 onwards and remained in service in limited numbers until 1941, taking part in both Polish and French Campaign. Both vehicles were not suited for combat but proved valuable for training purposes. Both vehicles were interim solutions with passenger car origin and its poor cross-country performance. From 1932 to 1934, Daimler-Benz produced only 147 Kfz.13 and 40 Kfz.14 on chassis supplied by Adlerwerke. Armor bodies were produced by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG in Hannover-Linden.

First conceived in 1929 the Kfz.13 and 14 were the result of the Wehrmachts need for reconnaissance vehicles that complied to the treaty of Versailles. This limited German designs' to four wheels and no revolving turret. The Kfz.13 was the armed version with a 7.92mm MG 13, this weapon was controlled using pedals which moved a revolving platform within the open turret. The Kfz.14 was the radio version, was not armed, and was designed to act in concert with the Kfz.13.
Although withdrawn from service early in 41 due to poor cross country performance, these vehicles continued in the capacity of general purpose armored cars with standard (horse drawn) infantry divisions.
Both cars were based upon the Adler 4x4 passenger vehicle with an armored body. Both were produced by the Deutsche Edalstahwerke company. This early armored car is interesting in the simple fact that two specialist designs were made, this concept would later evolve into greater specialization and supporting "families" of vehicles in the later Sd.Kfz types.

The Army ended up with two Light Armored vehicles by 1932. These were two-axel (four wheeled) vehicles, their frame being made by Alder Works in Frankfurt, while the body was created by Deutsche Edelstahl AG in Hannover. They were designated as Kfz. 13 and Kfz. 14. Manufacturing began in 1932 and ran until 1934 with a total of 147 being produced. These two early models saw service in both Calvary and reconnaissance units of the Wehrmacht. A few are known to have survived through the opening stages of the war and into 1941. Being very opened-topped, they were nicknamed "Badewanne" - Bathtubs.
• Kfz. 13 : One MG13 and a crew of two
• Kfz. 14 : A radio and a crew of three.
With a top speed of 45 km/h, these two early models contained the fundamentals of what would be used to manufacture better light armored, wheel-driven vehicles. Several versions of German light armored scout vehicles existed during WW 2.

Here picture of traintransport with Kfz 13 of a trainingsunit in 1942. By that time no Kfz 13 or 14 where in front duty anymore. From expired ebay.

Is there any record of these vehicles being used post 1940? Anti-partizan duties for example?

Thanks GeorGGe, excellent pictures, never seen those before.

As far as I know, no Kfz 13/14 have been commited to anti-partisan actions. Also the expert on Police armor, Dr Werner Regenberg mentions these Kfz no in his book `Panzerfahrzeuge und Panzereinheiten der Ordnungspolizei 1936-1945` ISBN 3-7909-0593-3.

I have seen them on pictures of reconnaisse trainingunits of 1943, some of them I placed on this thread.
