The cold trace to a hot GDR weapon Once the Wieger in the ore mountains was developed - Ominöse agency fetched plans.

The renowned American weapon magazine " Guns & Ammo" reported on " mysterious Wieger" , which had its rebirth in the USA. The weapon is considered there as " East German phantom Kalaschnikow".

Photo: Guns & Ammo
Wiesa. A businessman wanted to produce the forgotten GDR storm rifle Wieger in the ore mountains. With the search for the design documents it determined: They are missing. A trace leads into the USA. The new Wieger should be assembled in a factory in Großolbersdorf. Karl Bernd Esser, whose family in the 3000 inhabitants counting municipality in the middle ore mountains bought an old factory, still called this plan few months ago " much konkret". Esser had negotiated with two investors from Asia and Western Europe, who wanted to apply the necessary money. It engaged one on the interests of armaments companies specialized attorney, who before-felt in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs whether the production of a storm rifle was permissionable in the ore mountains. " That was sie" , says Esser, which wanted to loose-put thereafter correctly. But from then on everything went inclined.

" We wanted a loadable business plan aufstellen" , the 52-Jährige tells. " In addition we needed the old design documents of the Wieger. But those are lost."
The weapon had been developed in the second half of the 1980er years under leadership VEB equipment and tool construction of the Wiesa. The work was one of the prominent Rüstungsbetriebe in the GDR. Since 1958 were produced here the Soviet Kalaschnikow under license. In its gloss time the busy enterprise around the 1000 coworkers and manufactured annually up to 115.000 submachine guns of the Kalaschnikow family. This stood unmistakably godfather with the development of the GDR storm rifle. The Wieger should the robustness of a AK-74 with quality work " Larva in Germany" connect. After 1990 the former VEB came under trusteeship - and then the weighing he design documents disappeared.

The documents were in 50 crates and became according to data of Wolfgang Petzold, former chief accountant equipment and tool construction hand over VEB to which, on 9 November 1993 a commander Völz. This brought the crates to the instrument of surrender according to Munich, into the Maria Theresia road 16a, where " Group of training for use with integrated Stäben" their " Dokumentation" had. That sounds after army archives. Only such a archives possibly never existed. " I could not do it anyhow machen" , says Karl Bernd Esser, which controls archives work from the EFF EFF as historians and a journalist. However it discovered an explosive track: " Under the indicated address was in former times Munich the city office of the Bundesnachrichtendienstes."

At that time did the intelligence service of the German Federal Republic responsible for foreign clearing-up actually bring the plans for the former enemy weapon? The conclusion forces itself upon, by the agency however neither is confirmed nor disclaimed. The Federal Intelligence Service is " technically unzuständig" , the Federal Intelligence Service center communicated in Pullach briefly tied up. Another trace leads into the USA. There the Wieger is offered for about two years by a company named inter Ordnance Incorporation for 399.95 dollar per piece. A dumping price, which is to be probably only obtained, if one could save development costs.

The GDR had put scarcely 13 million ostmark into the development of the Wieger - the equivalent was in the 50 crates of full documents and tools, which disappeared in November 1993 on Nimmerwiedersehen from the equipment work in Wiesa. Karl Bernd Esser is convinced that the crates arrived on detours into the USA.

Since the Federal Intelligence Service with weapon businesses actually " technically does not ist" responsibly; , wanted " Free Presse" from its superordinate authority, the Office of the Federal Chancellor knows, what over the whereabouts of the 50 crates admits there is and whether the Federal Republic sold the weighing he plans into the USA. The inquiry remained unanswered so far.

The cold trace to a hot GDR weapon

By Mario Ulbrich

In the 80's-years in the ore mountains the rifle Wieger was developed. After 1990 all plans disappeared. Was it a secret service coup?

Still few months ago should Großolbersdorf, which becomes 3000-Einwohner-Dorf in the middle ore mountains, a weapon waffenschmiede. Karl Bernd Esser, whose family in the place bought an old factory, designates this plan very concretely „“. Esser had negotiated with two investors from Asia and Western Europe, who wanted to apply the necessary money. In the factory enterprise the new Wieger should assembled will-will that at GDR times developed here and today forgotten storm rifle.

Missing plans
Karl Bernd Esser engaged one on the interests of armaments companies specialized attorney, who before-felt in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs whether the production of a storm rifle was at all permissionable in the ore mountains. „That was it “, says Esser, which wanted to loose-put thereafter correctly. But from the time on everything went inclined. „We wanted to set up a loadable business plan “, tell the 52-Jährige. „To it we needed the old design documents of the Wieger. But those are missing. “

The storm rifle Wieger owes its names to the place Wiesa and the English name for Germany Germany. Already it points to the fact that she was rather not for the armies of the Warsaw Treaty states meant. Rather the initiative proceeded from the range commercial coordination of the GDR external trade Ministry, the foreign currency procuring parties of the SED. In the second half of the 1980-he 1980 the storm rifle was developed under leadership VEB equipment and tool construction of the Wiesa with Anna mountain Buchholz.

The work was one of the prominent Rüstungsbetriebe in the GDR. Since 1958 were produced here the Soviet submachine gun Kalaschnikow under license. In its gloss time the busy enterprise around the 1000 coworkers and manufactured annually up to 115000 rifles of the Kalaschnikow family.

This stood unmistakably godfather with the development of the GDR storm rifle. The Wieger should connect the robustness of a AK-74 with quality work „to larva in Germany “. After 1990 the former VEB came under the administration Treuhand-und then disappeared the weighing he design documents.

The documents were in 50 crates and became according to data of Wolfgang Petzold, former chief accountant equipment and tool construction hand over VEB to which, on 9 November 1993 a commander Völz. This brought the crates to the instrument of surrender according to Munich, into the Maria Theresia road 16a, where „the group of training for use had their at integrated staffs “„documentation “. That sounds after army archives. Only such a archives possibly never existed. „I could make it anyhow not “, say Karl Bernd Esser, which controls archives work from the EFF EFF as historians and a journalist.

An address Federal Intelligence Service
However it discovered an explosive track: „Under the indicated address was in former times Munich the city office of the Federal Intelligence Service. “At that time did the intelligence service of the German Federal Republic responsible for foreign clearing-up actually bring the plans for the former enemy weapon? The conclusion forces itself upon, by the agency however neither is confirmed nor disclaimed. The Federal Intelligence Service is technically incompetent „“, communicated the Federal Intelligence Service center in Pullach briefly tied up.

Inquiry in the chancellorship
Another trace leads into the USA. There the storm rifle Wieger is offered to Ordnance Incorporation for 399.95 dollar per piece for about two years by a company named inter.

Since the Federal Intelligence Service is actually „technically not responsible with weapon businesses “, wanted „the free press “from its superordinate authority, which, knows Office of the Federal Chancellor, what over the whereabouts of the 50 crates admits there is and whether the Federal Republic sold the weighing he plans into the USA. The inquiry is so far unanswered.

On the trace of the forgotten GDR weapon “Wieger”

Storm rifle from Wiesa should be presented again - construction plans stolen

Anna mountain Buchholz. 50 crates, without trace disappeared. Crates of full papers, tools and measuring instruments. It concerns thus not only a considerable volume, but also a substantial weight, which dissolved there apparently in air. In the crates everything that is needed, was to be manufactured in order the storm rifle Wieger developed at GDR times in the VEB equipment and tool construction Wiesa with Anna mountain Buchholz industrially.

Prevented rebirth
Karl Bernd Esser, historian and journalist from Munich, wanted to again produce the weapon in the ore mountains, legendary in contactor circles. In Großolbersdorf, where Essers family bought an old factory, a factory should develop. Esser negotiated with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and went on investor search. But when it wanted to make Ernst and see the old design documents, it stated that these away were.

Seemed to be sun clear, where the 50 crates had remained after the turn. Before 16 years, when the once state-owned enterprise stood under trusteeship, they were handed out to an agency of the German Federal Republic: On 9 November 1993 a commander Völz signed an instrument of surrender, according to which the weighing he material should be transferred to Munich, into the Maria Theresia road 16a, where the “group of training for use had its “documentation” at integrated staffs”.

That sounds after military archives. Only such a archives probably never existed. “I could make it anyhow not”, say Karl Bernd Esser, which controls archives work from the EFF EFF as historians. However it discovered an explosive track: “Under the indicated address was in former times Munich the city office of the Federal Intelligence Service.”

Did the intelligence service of the German Federal Republic responsible for foreign clearing-up actually bring the plans for the former enemy weapon? The conclusion forces itself upon, by the agency however neither is confirmed nor disclaimed. The Federal Intelligence Service is “technically incompetent”, communicated the Federal Intelligence Service center in Pullach briefly tied up.

Officially disappeared
An inquiry of the “free press” in the Office of the Federal Chancellor, which became the Federal Intelligence Service superordinate agency, similarly scarcely answered: Over the whereabouts of possible documents to the storm rifle Wieger is not anything well-known, communicated a speaker. Before the man had still in good spirits been. One has someone found, which is been versed “absolutely well” with such things in the department of intelligence services, was called it there. The expert investigated two week long and found - nothing?

Informative is the short answer from the chancellorship nevertheless. It shows nevertheless that the weighing he materials are actually not discoverable. That also excludes that the Federal Republic sold the GDR storm rifle legally into the USA. There, more exactly said into the US Federal State North Carolina, leads an interesting trace.

The Wieger under the designation “STG offers in Monroe the residents to weapon company inter Ordnance 2000” (storm rifle 2000) for two years for scarcely 400 dollar. A dumping price, which is in the opinion of weapon experts to be only obtained, if the company could save development costs. Were the 50 crates from Wiesa shifted thus illegaly over the large pond?

“After I gave no peace, received I an unofficial call from the Federal Intelligence Service”, report to Karl Bernd Esser. “The caller meant, the delivery was at that time from state security service people fictitious, those the weapon system later illegaly sold.” A variant, which lies in the range of the possible one. The impact for the development of the Wieger nevertheless came from the range commercial coordination (KoKo) of the GDR Ministry for Foreign Trade, which by state security service Colonel Alexander Schalck Golodkowski was led. Its arms traffic company Imes import export should the Wieger for the GDR on a large scale marked out. The business descended by the turn the brook. Did it continue later?

The Americans explain their low price certainly with the fact that they let the weapon in Romania produce. One procured oneself a original Wieger and copied these, so the information of a company spokesperson to a German television team, which works at present on a documentation over the Wieger.

The formulation, over which the whereabouts are not “more possible for documents” anything well-known, suggest also that chancellorship and Federal Intelligence Service place in agreement that they had to do ever with the 50 crates weighing he material. The request to specify this statement remained so far without answer.

Burned millions
It would be however also more than embarrassing, should have lost government agencies of the German Federal Republic the crates. These represent an immense value. The GDR enterprises taken part in the development had at that time invested at least 150 million ostmark. After the turn the Federal Republic spent then scarcely 200 million D-mark, in order the Wiesaer Rüstungsbetrieb, which was allowed to suddenly manufacture no more weapons to change over to civilian production. In addition conventional penalties come into unknown quantities height, that were paid, because the enterprise could not fulfill its weighing he supply contracts with India and Peru.

Karl Bernd Esser did not give the idea up of a new birth of the Wieger in the ore mountains yet. “Case we a reproduction for 1000 dollar in better quality than the Americans get, could find we our market”, mean it. But these considerations are vague.

Momentarily Esser thinks to place because of the disappearance of the documents charge against unknown. Whether becoming known the dubious connections will lead around the crates removed in Wiesa to an investigation, wanted to know the “free press” from the chancellorship. An answer is still pending.

Missing GDR weapon: Federal Intelligence Service admits participation

Design documents of the rifle Wieger were guaranteed officially by the intelligence service

Wiesa/Berlin. In the case of the missing design documents of the GDR storm rifle Wieger the Office of the Federal Chancellor confirmed the participation of the Federal Intelligence Service (Federal Intelligence Service) for the first time on Monday. Those about 50 crates were fetched 1993 actually from Federal Intelligence Service people in the equipment and tool construction at that time Wiesa with Anna mountain Buchholz, informed for the range of intelligence services of responsible coworkers of the chancellorship.

The Wieger should become the secret weapon of the GDR during the Devisenbeschaffung. In order to be world marketable, the storm rifle for NATO cartridges had been developed. 1989 had existed it all hardness tests. “The Wieger shot just as reliable with minus 60 degrees Celsius as with plus 50 degrees”, reported a formerly leading coworker how/as-saws Rüstungsbetriebs of the “free press”. “We sprinkled it with sand, without them blocked. During troop testing in Peru and India the Wieger let also in things precision storm rifles from the USA and West Germany far behind itself.”

But before the quantity production began, the turn and the work came into Wiesa to civilian production were changed over. Standing under trusteeship the enterprise had to publish the plans, theories and tools for the Wieger. According to instrument of surrender these went to military archives into Munich.

Few months ago the historian Karl Bernd Esser originating from Munich wanted to again present the Wieger in a factory in the ore mountains. It came out that the construction plans had disappeared. Military archives had obviously never existed - however under its address Munich the city office had been Federal Intelligence Service. The intelligence service gave its participation however neither too nor disclaimed it.

A questioning of earlier intelligence service employees has now resulted in that in the first half of the 1990er years weapons, devices and design documents from GDR arms enterprises were procured by the Federal Intelligence Service, was called it on Monday from the chancellorship. Also the cradle down situations were at that time guaranteed and handed over to the Federal Office for military technology. Their whereabouts are at present still unsettled, but can exclude one that the documents were passed on to a strange intelligence service.

A trace had led into the USA, where the weapon company inter Ordnance Inc. for some years produces a weighing he reproduction. The film producer Andreas Wolter from Berlin followed this track for a MDR documentation. “The Americans insured us that they do not possess the original plans, but for their version of the weapon took apart, said an old GDR Wieger” he.

Transmission reference
The television broadcast “Umschau” of the Central German broadcast (MDR) plans a contribution for its expenditure on Tuesday over the Wieger. Transmission time is 20,15 o'clock.

Wieger

Wieger is the name for military hand-held weapons of the series of STG 940 and the SSG 82 from GDR production.

The label name “Wieger” was created thereby particularly for the export of the weapons VEB equipment and tool construction of the Wiesa (GWB) abroad. “Wieger” is a concentration (Neologismus) of the words “Wiesa” and “Germany”.

Wieger STG 940
(STG 941, STG 942, STG 943, STG 944, STG 945)

description

with the Wieger STG 940 concerns it one of the GDR in self-direction developed storm rifle family, on the basis of the Russian AK-74. Thus the construction system of the 74er series was taken over, modified that one however technically. As characteristic it is to be noted that the STG-940-Serie was appropriate from the beginning not for the Eastern Bloc-typical cartridge 5.45 x of 39, but for NATO calibers of 5,56x45 and exhibits a complete Redesign of the outside appearance. Beside the use of another plastic for the again developed Handschutz and a new Mündungsfeuerdämpfer, coin/shape above all the GDR-typical Schulterstütze the shaping of the storm rifle. The STG-940-Serie covers five well-known models, which contains both storm rifles in different variants, and LMG and sniper weapon. Thereby different numberings of the model row 940 were assigned to the respective weapon types. In detail is this: The STG-941 as standard tower rifle with plastic piston, the STG-942-Karabiner with metal shoulder support, the STG-943 as compact variant with shortened run and metal shoulder support, the LMG-944 as light group machine gun and the precision rifle PG-945 with bipod, extended run and sight. A weapon with the numbering 940 does not exist. This is only the name for the basic execution of the weapon system.

history

the development of the weapon family and preparation of series production happened approx. 1985 on initiative of the range commercial coordination (KoKo) of the Ministry for foreign trade (MAH) of the GDR [director/conductor of the there department of commercial policy, Uhlig]. Carrier of the development project was those the KoKo head department II assigned company IMES GmbH (“international measuring technique” import export GmbH), which was mainly for the trade with weapons and military equipment responsible. [Uhlig = boss]. The moreover „the department of armament and chemical services “(BCD) of the Ministry for public security (MfS) was involved, which probably drew responsible for the safety device of the secret development [Colonels Bernd Dressler]. The production of the weapon family took place in the VEB equipment and tool construction Wiesa (GWB), that with a year sow impact from approx. 100.000 and a production capacity desired of 200.000 pieces of submachine guns in the year apart from the location Suhl, where the weapon parts were manufactured, exclusive contactor weapon manufacturer of the GDR and for the final assembly of the weapons it was responsible.

Which gave the impact for the development of the STG to 940 family is neither clearly, nor confirms. However it can be assumed that possible profits on exchange speculation from export trades represented the principal reason abroad not-socialist. Like that the interpretation of the weapons for NATO - the caliber a central reference to it is. There already since the seventies the hand-held weapons of the GWB Wiesa were profitably exported particularly into third world states, however the export of other military goods predominantly on the states Warsaw Pact limited, saw themselves many responsible person of the GDR economics particularly in the increase of the armament exports into the states outside of Warsaw Pact an opportunity for the improvement of the constantly worsening foreign trade balance. In the year 1981 by the GDR in „the agreement between the governments of the GDR and the USSR over the assignment of the license and technical documentation for the production of the submachine guns 5.45 mm of Kalaschnikov AK74, AKS74 and AKS 74N in the GDR “the building guidances and license right to the 74er Kalaschnikow series, were acquired however an export licence was not given on the part of the USSR, which necessary avoiding on for NATO the caliber, as well as the development of a new weapon could have made around evenly that export prohibition to go around. The moreover one is obvious the assumption, which particularly by the fusion of the wide-spread NATO cartridge with the proven Kalaschnikowsystem at an attractive sales price, which let probability of a material interest to buy judge abroad favorably. A large-scale re-education on the new weapon would likewise be void for most states, since Kalaschnikowsysteme are to be handled far common and simple.

Thus mainly two large orders existed over the supply of the Wiegerfamilie in the export trade 1989: Peru had ordered a contingent for the equipment of its police force and had let India an order over 10 million copies note. The fulfilment of the contracts did not come off however. The Federal Republic as legal successors of the GDR cancelled the existing orders and paid to these countries corresponding conventional penalties.

Detailed tests of the weapons of the Wieger series were accomplished in September 1988 by a NVA - group of tests on the area of the rocket-technical basis 2 in Brandenburg. The weapons a reliable function, a good accuracy and no differences to the comparable Kalaschnikowsystem of the row 74 were essentially certified. Were positively emphasized in the test report the resistance against dirt with the usual tactical use in the troop, high accuracy, as well as the handling of the models.

Over the number of all weapons of the Wiegersystems ever manufactured no concrete numbers are present. Rather the data concerning production, up to the assumption of completely unrealistic numbers of items contradict themselves. Only as secured the data concerning the manufacturing of approx. apply. 10,000 weapons of the models STG 941 and 942. The compact version, the STG 943, was present probably only as prototype.

Whether weapons at units of the armed organs of the GDR, already manufactured, were not spent are clear. However some sources refer to a planned expenditure of the STG 941/942 at departments of the people police readiness for the year 1990.

Following up on this somewhat older topic, two short german TV documentaries about the "Wieger 940".

By the way, the "Wieger 940" series were never designated a "Sturmgewehr", not even by officials in the former GDR.

Why Communists built a NATO caliber Assault Rifle

An extremely rare weapon, I personally do not know of any private person who has this weapon in his possession, not even as a deactivated version.

Hans

P.S. In the 1990s, our Internet friend Horst, who was a former NVA officer (Major/Oberstleutnant), told us about the mass melting down of these weapons in an East German steel mill.
His official duty at the time was to supervise this destruction of small arms for several months.
It were very interesting dialogues at that time, our friend was glad and happy to have this regime behind him.
