One thing for sure, many of the "Charlemagne"survivors were executed by gen.Leclerc's troops just at the end of the war.(they "forgot "to judge them!)

Twelve Waffen-SS veterans from Charlemagne were executed by Free French troops on 8 May 1945 at Bad Reichenhall.

When asked by General Leclerc "why do you wear a German uniform?"

the French Waffen SS replied "General, why do wear an American uniform"

That was enough to sign their death warrants.

It was common that Waffen-SS soldiers were shot at sight, in stead of being taken prisoners, so odds are French have shot French.

In what context?

It was common that Waffen-SS soldiers were shot on sight by the French?

or:

It was common that French Waffen-SS soldiers were shot on sight?

or:

It was common that French Waffen-SS soldiers were shot on sight by the French?

My understanding of the incident :

Leclerc: why are you wearing the uniform of foreigners?

French SS man: Us? What about you?

(LeClerc was wearing an American uniform)

Leclerc had them killed on the spot.

The French Waffen-SS soldiers had already been prisoners since 2 May. But they had been American prisoners until then. On 6 May, the Free French took over supervision of the prisoners – which made the Charlemagne soldiers very uneasy. They asked to be transported somewhere else out of fear for repercussions by the Free French, but this was denied. On 6 May it was ordered that they would be executed, but on May 8, a date chosen by the sadist Leclerc.

On 8 May the 12 men were executed in groups of four. When succumbing to the hail of bullets, every one of them cried out “Vive la France!”.

For those who also wish to pay their last respects, the twelve men rest at Sankt Zeno, a cemetery, at Bad Reichenhall.

Tombs are located; Gruppe 11, Reihe 3, n° 81-82.

Below is a picture of Leclerc in discussion with the soon to be executed prisoners, during which the already much-maligned discussion is believed to have taken place.

A pity, since so few French fought. What that must have done to the gene pool.......
