Hi
No record of Karl Rudolf Freund in any SS rank lists. No Waffen SS served at Stalingrad. There is an Oberstleutnant Freund (no christian name) in the army rank list for 1944. He was an artillery officer and was promoted Oberst 1.1.1945

Thank you for replying, mmm i wonder if this could be him?

A bit of background.
He is my grandfather and i know nothing of him, and im desperate to find out.
I have a copy of my mothers birth certificate and it has him as Surmbannfuhrer Karl Rudolf Freund.
The waffen ss only came to arise through the rank Surmbannfuhrer (isnt this unique to ss?)
There is also the number 21942 assocated with a picture. I dont know if this is his service number, i think it is.

We once had his letters from Stalingrad to his father saying how angry they where and how they lived on horsemeat.
My mother remembers being poted to Poland and living in a house in Adolph Hitler strass.
She alo remembers her father and other men at the house wearing black uniforms and she cleaned her fathers high leather riding boots.

The only other thing she can tell me is when the germans retreated west in the face of the red army advance, she and her mother where picked up in a big merccedes (spelling) car and take to the train station.
Both in Poland and Berlin they had a special high-ranking officers private compartemnt on the train, whilst others crowded and pushed desperate to get a seat on the train.

My mother saw him only once after the war and he was doing a menial job in berlin. He mother told her he was hiding from the Allies!!!

Apparently he died in the 50's of alcaholism but no one is sure.

I would appreiciate any information.

That's not your Grandfather (unless it's an 'older' photograph) or your Grandfather was not in the SS.

Thats defenitly my grandfather but I suspect the photo was taken in the 1930's. He was always a professional soldier.

This pic is my mothers Birth Certificate. It is a copy made in 1944 and shows my Grandfather as Sturmbannfurher. I dont know if this indicates his 1944 position or 1937 position, when the original was issued.

If he wasnt SS then that rank must apply to another service. Any ideas??

Apart from the SS, the SA and NSFK would also be possible here, as they had the same basic rank system and also used the rank Sturmbannführer. (But not the NSKK, which also had a very similiar rank system but used the term Staffelführer instead of Sturmbannführer)

Das Infantrie Sturmabzeichen was instituted on 20.12.39, so this photo can not be from the 1930's

Yes you're right, the badge is 1940. Maybe he didnt become a Sturmbannfurher until 1944 and the birth cirtificate refers to his position at the time of getting the copy, not the original.

The plot thickens!!

Is there any way of looking up his name on a huge database and it coming back with his war details???

Thanx for your help.

P.S I have that badge

Karl

I have no idea. We now know that in 1939 he was Regular Army, and by Novemeber 1944 he was a Sturmbannfurher.
He severd in Stalingrad and his family (my grandmother, my mother and auntie) where moved to Poland (I think Danzik)
A possible army number (above) has come to light.

Thats all i know, im trying to find out everything else. I was kind of hoping you would tell me the rest :D

The number mentioned can also be the identification of a unit, the so-called Feldpostnummer (Field Postal Number). Over the years the numbers were used for different units.

Number 21942 was used for:

1939-1940 Luftwaffen-Bau-Gerätezug 4/XVII
1941-1943 Transport-Kommandantur zur besonderen Verwendung 10
14.8.1944-10.11.1944 leichte Fernsprech-Überwachungszug 657

Hope this can help.

Cheers,

Hans
