Any idea on this one posted by "JRA" from http://www.wehrmacht-awards (forum):
Does anyone have any personal information about Rudolf Koppe? Where was he born? An inquiry on another forum concerned a pistol that had been acquired with an inscription on the slide: " Rittm. Koppe" above "Pritzwalk (Priegnitz)". And we aren't talking about any type of presentation piece. This was a combat used pistol: a Browning Hi-Power of 1949 vintage. Matching a person to a single family name is sketchy of course, but wasn't the rank Rittm. used more by cavalry officers, and Koppe was in the Panzer-Korps. I searched the old reprint of senior Heer general and staff officers and found no Koppe. Thank you for any assistance.
Anything on this one??
Thanks

I assume this is the officer in question. His Friedenstruppenteil was a motorized infantry (later Panzergrenadier) regiment, and his rank is listed as Hauptmann at the relevant time, but while he was with the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Truppen, he probably would have carried the rank of Rittmeister. Can anyone confirm this?

Koppe, Rudolf Wilhelm Friedrich,

†25.05.1995 in Hildesheim

** Das-Ritterkreuz.de erroneously has him born in Johannesthal, Sudetenland.

04.10.1944 Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen II. Stufe
06.10.1944 Nennung im Ehrenblatt des Heeres
18.11.1944 Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes

He also appears to have received the Sudetenland Medal (Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938), but I don't have a date for that.

The decorations match the photo in the KC ID thread - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=29879&p=2097100&hil ... f#p2097100 - except he appears to have chosen to wear the Sports Badge instead of the Panzerkampfabzeichen. Or was there a regulation that if you received the Panzerkampfabzeichen as a Panzergrenadier, and reached the II. Stufe as a Panzeraufklärer, the Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen was substituted for the Panzerkampfabzeichen rather than supplementing it? Because otherwise, as I understood it, one could wear two battle badges if one earned both.

Hello Dave, to Your enquiry below :

"his rank is listed as Hauptmann at the relevant time, but while he was with the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Truppen, he probably would have carried the rank of Rittmeister. Can anyone confirm this?"

His rank as Rittmeister is strange, because in the div. list (under PAA.23) as well as in his award lists (as Kdr. PAA.23) he is always reported as Hauptmann.
Then I too noted that he was twice (in his Karteikarte) registered as "Kdr. PAA. 23", but I believe (like You) that he was first Fhr. then later Kdr.

Rgds., Rossano
