i would like to know who is considered to be the best of italy's ww2 generals, including biographical information and photos.

rommel talked about how he thought italian troops were good soldiers, just badly equipped and that the generals had been politized. i guess he meant merit was not considered enough when promotions were handed out.

I have no doub about who was the best Italian general in WW2.
General Giovanni Messe, promoted in '43 to Marshal of Italy after he's performance in Tunisia and Russia.
Best of the best of the Italian army!

Bergonzoli did he's best to stop the advance of Wavel, but (it's my opinion) he's men was not adeguately prepared and trained of the use of the more advanced M13 tank.
Bergonzolis tankers the only experience they had was mustly with the old and obsolete L3/35 who was equipped only with machineguns.

Well when the battle started, they charged the British roops like theyr tanks was the small tankette. The fired in moving, with both their main gun and the dual machineguns, exatly as they did using the L3.
My opinion is if Bergonzoli's men was trained properly he would without much trouble pushed Wavell's army back to Egypt.
Bergonzoli was a active and smart General an he keept counterattacking wavell uintil he lost everything.

But I rest in my opinion about General Messe, he managed to push he's troops against the British/American force and he gained some victories even if Italians was equipped with the harmless M15 tanks and a handfull of M40 semoventi.
He managed to keep virtually barehanded the allied out of Tunisia for a while. He was a good General, capable to use the best of he's troop.
He trustd them, and theyr trusted him. If we had G. Messe in NA instead of the idiot of Graziani im 100% sure the defeat of El Sidi Barrani, Bardia, El Mechili, Benghasi and the lost of the Cirenaica (who it was lost 'cause the inectitude of the Marshall) would never happen!

Look what he did in Tunisia, he managed to fight back virtually unarmed the allied and make them runaway! And he fought against Shermans and Le Grant tank's, imagine what he could have been capable if he was there instead of Graziani!

Mussolini was a good general too, by the way. But he saw more action during WWI.

I agree with Messe. In North Africa he also put into practice what he learned in Russia, where he commanded the CSIR. Too bad that Gariboldi was put in command of ARMIR.

Messe was a General that looked after his troops and cared for them. In Russia, since nothing valuable was coming from Italy with regards to the incoming harsh winter he went in Romania and bought there winter garments for his troops.

Best regards

And I'd like to add two other Generals:

Gen. Federico Ferrari Orsi (CO X Army Corps, North Africa, KIA, Gold Medal)

Gen. Giulio Martinat (Chief of Staff, Alpini Army Corps, Russia, KIA, Gold Medal)

Best regards

:)

He was not a General, infact. He was a Bersaglieri Corporal during WWI. IIRC he was wounded, rather badly, during an exercise in the front area (IIRC a mortar exploded):

Best regards.

Iep! Didn't mean Mussolini, sorry, but I can't come up with the guy's name right now.

All those damn names! This is the third time I mix 'em up! Can't we just use nicknames?
