#1

Post by David C. Clarke » 09 Oct 2003, 04:04

Please feel free to delete this topic is it has been covered before. But I am looking for information on the worst warcrimes committed by German forces in Yugoslavia, during that country's occupation in WWII.

Thanks Much.

Best Regards,
David

After the insurection in Serbia in 1941. Hitler ordered that for each dead German soldier 100 citizens of Serbia sholud be shot and for each wounded 50. When an attack on a German column near the city of Kraljevo occured in October. The Germans rounded up around 3000 citizens of of that city and around 6000 citizens of Kragujevac(many of which high school students) and shot them.

Thank you Milos, I wasn't aware of this incident. It's surprising that this occurred rather early in the occuption as opposed to later, when resistance was really building up.

DCC -- The Wehrmacht started shooting disproprtionate numbers of hostages, at ratios up to 100:1, within a few months after the Nazis occupied Yugoslavia. Many of the senior commanders in the Balkans were later put on trial by an American military tribunal at Nuernberg in the "Hostage case." The UN War Crimes Commission report of the trial is available on line, beginning at:

http://www.ess.uwe.ac.uk/WCC/List1.htm

After the war, the Yugoslavs shot or hanged nearly every German Army and Waffen-SS commander of Brigade-sized or larger military units that they could get their hands on.

There is a photographic exhibit with commentary, on Nazi crimes in Yugoslavia and elsewhere, available (although the site is currently "undergoing maintenance") on-line at:

Anytime, DCC. I posted a list of the Yugoslav war crimes trials of German officials over in the ABR section, where Michael was nice enough to put a "stickie" on it. It's at:

If you want bio details, please let me know.

DCC, here's a link to the archived copy of the site DT mentioned, unfortunately with a few pictures missing and deals only with warcrimes in Serbia in 1941.

Hope this helps

David,

The War in Yugoslavia is very interesting and fascinating. Do you know that the Jasenovac concentration camp located in Croatia was the third largest in Europe! About 800 000 died there. Astonishing! The conflict between the Ustachas and the Chetniks was really brutal.

You should divide your number with 10 for objectivity. (Every number that comes from home Balkan sources has one or two 0 too much) And Ustashas and Cetniks even cooperated, depending on situation. The link between them were Germans or Italians. Anyway the great majority of victims on Balkan in WW2 were because of civil war (Ustashas, Cetniks, Partisans) and not because of the Germans and Italians. But of course the last two are the main reason the civil war started on Balkan in 41 - 45.

Krilnik. Although I'm no fan of the chetniks and I am in many ways pro-croatian - modern day croatian that is (I was a Croatian soldier and I fought to protect your sorry ass '91/'92) It is established fact that the Ustasha and Chetniks cooperated under German command in World War II especially close to the end of the war when the Partisans aided by the Soviets were sweeping all before them.

I shall endeavour to post pics of actual documents and groups of Ustashas with Cetniks on operations. Leave it with me.
