German Pre WWII Officers - Help

#1

Post by Stauffenberg II » 09 Oct 2003, 20:20

Hi gentlemen!

I´m researching some Officers from the "Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres, 1. Mai 1932". Does anybody know about the fate of the following senior and general staff qualified officers. They didn´t manage to become Generals (due to Keilig) although they were very high ranking in the last published "Rangliste" (1932). I would like to know why.

Oberstleutnante

Neumann, Hausorden-RK, Kdr. d. 8. (Pr.) Reit. Rgt., 01.02.1930 (4)
Griese, Kdr. d. 5. (Pr.) Reit. Rgt., 01.04.1931 (1)

Majore

Fumetti von, Hausorden-RK, im St. d. 7. (Bayer.) Div. (I), 01.02.1928 (17a)
Jesse, Kdr. d. 5. Pion. Btl., 01.02.1928 (32a)
Hannemann, im Reichs. Min. (K) – T2, 01.02.1929 (7a)
Bloem, Kronen-Orden 4. Kl., im Reichsw. Min. (A) – Wa Prw 1, 01.02.1929 (14a)

Many thanks in advance!

Two more:

Oberstleutnante

Reiche von, Hausorden-RK, Kdr. d. 9. (Pr.) Reit. Rgt., 01.02.1931 (15)
Redei von, im 8. (Pr.) Inf. Rgt. - Kdr. II. Btl., 01.06.1931 (2)

The first one is not mentioned in Keilig but listed as Gen. Lt. and Kdr. Wehrersatzinspektion Oppeln in the Heereseinteilung 1939 (Stahl, Friedrich). Can anybody help me out?

I'm sorry to tell you that the names do not ring a bell with me. However, the most likely explanation for them not having reached general rank, seems to me that they must have retired while still being in the Reichswehr. The number of general slots was very limited, so careers had to be broken off at the colonel level. Only the best of the best got promoted above Oberstleutnant rank.

Hi Jürgen,

Most of them died prior to the war.

Bernhard-Ulrich von Fumetti von: 4 Nov 1889 - 26 Sep 1933. Killed in an accident

Ernst Jesse: 21 May 1889 - 4 Mar 1937

Hans Bloem: 4 Aug 1887 - 30 Jun 1937

Ernst Griese: 1 Oct 1887 - 6 Mar 1935

Ernst von Reiche: 28 Feb 1884 - 12 Jan 1965

Bruno Neumann: 26 Apr 1883 - 31 Dec 1943

Glenn

8O Glenn, are you extraterrestrial? 8O

Your knowledge daunts me once again!

Please, what source do you have to research these DoB/DoD. You don´t have the last ranks?

Many thanks for your help! :)

Generals

I have Generalmajor dates for these two:

Von Reiche: Generalmajor - 1 Apr 1936
Neumann: Generalmajor - 1 Oct 1935

I believe the others died in the rank of Oberst.

One of the most useful sources for DOB abd DOD and command position information is the four volume work by Günter Wegner: Stellenbesetzung der Deutschen Heere 1815-1939 published by Biblio Verlag.

Maybe one more (from the 1932 Rangliste):

Bernard, Kdr. 18. Reiter-Regiment, Obst. 01.04.1932 (14), Hausorden-RK

First name, DoB, DoD last rank (with RDA) available. btw: definitely not Curt Bernard.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Stauffenberg II,

Oberst Richard Bernhard, born 16 Sep 1885, died 26 Mar 1939.

He handed over command of the 18. Reiter-Regiment on 1 Feb 1933. He does not appear in the 1934 Stellenbesetzung. Presumably retired as an Oberst.

Now the strange part. The photograph in "Die Generale des Heeres" for Curt Bernhard is the same photograph used for Richard Bernhard in "Die Führer des Reichsheeres"

Glenn

Wow, excellent investigation Glenn.

So ... after ruling out that Gen. Kabisch took a (wrong) junior officer in his book "Führer des Reichsheeres" the Bradley picture of Gen. Lt. Curt Bernard is wrong!? Interesting ... my Bradley errata is getting more and more extensive.

The fine thing is I have now a pic of Richard ... the bad thing is I now lack a pic of Curt.

Many thanks for you help Glenn! :)

That´s great Santiago!

Talking about Stellenbesetzungen 1933 and 1935 ... can you figure out who led the Departments in the Truppenamt (T1, T2, T3, T4) by any chance?

Many thanks in advance!
