I don't think anyone really knows the numbers involved. There were probably only 4 Gold actually awarded other than on paper. Bronze and Silver ?????

If the number of requests for the paperwork to apply for the awards is anything to go by there may have been quite a number of the bronze awards and silver awards awarded on paper -this is something I am researching but is slow progress! There are personnel files available to look at on mircofilm but this takes hundreds of hours work!
It's not likely that there was another formal presentation of gold awards after the first on in february 1945 BUT there may have been. I am interested in any info others may have on this question! Himmler's field HQ existed right up to the last days so who knows..? IN a number of publications it is suggested that applications would have been in the mid hundreds for the bronz and silver awards...

The APB was propably more common than we think, but after the war the holders kept quite quiet about having been awarded them, because it was (for some strange reason) a little bit dirty to have been involved in AP actions.
In Manfred Dörrs book about the holders of the CCC in Gold, you can find names of several soldiers who got the APB in gold at the same time.
The 4 awards mentioned here are propably the 4 de luxe versions awraded by Himmler at one occasion.

To date only four known Gold Badges awarded. They were awarded on 15th Feb 1945 by Himmler. They were the special Junkers Gold plated tombak awards (according to Foremans Guide).

The first was awarded to SS Oberstumführer Erich Kühbander of the 24th SS Division. (That is discounting the Gold award Himmler made to himself).

The other three I do not have the names of to hand. They are listed in the “Völkischer Beobachter” of 21 feb 1945 if anyone has reference to this copy to hand ?

I am going to go to the British Library and get a copy of the Volkisher Beobachter that covers this presentation so in due course I will try and scan the article and post it here for the forum members...
