How many beheadings at Dortmund? This would be interesting.

As a reaction to the ever increasing number of death sentences in the judicial areas Hamm, Aurich,Detmold and Osnabrueck(my birthplace),and as a relief of Koln prison, there was an execution site build in Dortmund. The difficult transportations of the death candidates to Koln prison, were a thing of the past.Dortmund could be very easily reached,(Hamburger strasse 24)and was a small prison, 329 males, 37 females.
On april 30th, 1943, the execution room was reported ready. It had to be abandoned in february 1945 by the advance of the US army in western Germany.

In this execution site, 305 people lost their lives.
I found this post by Paul53, most likely a translation of the Waltenbacher book. 305 people is the total number of fallbeil victims.
This number probably does not include those beheaded after 1945 at this location.

Honouring the dead at Plotzensee prison in 1948

Note that the execution shed is much larger in this film than it is now. About half of it has its roof missing and only outer walls are standing. This part was evidently damaged in a bombing raid and later torn down and a memorial wall built. The heavily damaged death house portion of the cell block is clearly visible. Even though the interior shot of the execution room is of poor quality, you can see a faint outline of the original sink with the tiled back splash wall, and also black shutters on the front windows. There are original wooden doors at the entrance to the execution room. The sink, window shutters, and the wooden entrance doors were removed at some later date, probably in 1950.

The film proves little was done to repair the September 3-4 bomb damage. Prisoners may have stacked the bricks and cleaned the area but obviously Haus III was a wreck. We can see the execution building was a lot bigger than as we know it today. The fallbeil may have been located in the left (bombed) section of the building because it, of course, was damaged. I imagine many Forum members have seen this film on YouTube. It is quite significant for what it shows.

I think the Pathe footage is the earliest film we have of the execution room and the prison although the Russians did film and photograph the building when they took it in May, 1945. Wish someone could locate that footage.

At one point the film crew may be trying to show blood stains still on the floor.

According to the Memorial Center, Haus III was demolished in 1950. Still photos taken at that time look very much like the film except that the damaged walls of the execution building are gone.

Other visuals of interest: the route the mourners take shows the gate to the House III area and they are
passing by Hof 4 where richtbeil executions took place. This is the route condemned prisoners probably took from the front entrance to Haus III. The speeches are in the area where the corpse trucks would have parked. Clearly a lot of cleanup had already been done (stacked bricks) possibly by prisoners before Berlin fell. Surprising they did not film the hooks.

I have read that some relatives could not bring themselves to enter the execution room itself. It must have been dark, dank, filthy.

In this aerial photo (probably mid to late 1930's), you can see how large the execution building originally was. The half of it closer to the front of the photo was damaged in a bombing raid, later demolished and then a memorial wall built to close off the remainder of the building. So it would be like cutting the building in half and then building a wall through the middle of it, while bulldozing down the front part. The entrance to the execution room was the second door closest to the condemned prisoner cell block next to the execution building. So the condemned prisoners had to walk only a short distance across the yard to reach the execution room entrance. Once inside, they were executed very quickly, typically in 10-15 seconds if beheaded.

Five wooden benches

#5214

Post by Pete26 » 04 May 2014, 02:14

This article on the Stadelheim fallbeil mentions that five wooden benches and one metal guillotine mechanism was handed over to the Bavarian National Museum.
Helga Puhlmann, a spokeswoman for the Bavarian National Museum, said the guillotine was among five wooden benches and one metal guillotine mechanism that had landed in the museum’s collection after being handed over by Bavarian justice authorities in the early 1970s.

In case anyone is interested, the Bavarian Commission debating whether or not to display the fallbeil recommended
that it not be displayed. The Bavarian National Museum will follow this recommendation. It will be returned to storage.

They are most likely honoring the wishes of the last surviving White Rose member and perhaps the last surviving Scholl sibling as well. That's understandable.

Note that fallbeil execution intervals are typically 3 minutes according to this document.
