Camoflauge Uniforms and the Army

Postby AdolfDettmer on 09 Dec 2003 22:01

I was curious if anyone had any information regarding the issueing of camoflauge tunics to the regular German Army. I have seen several examples of these tunics, but how commonplace were they?

And if they were issued, would an entire squad/platoon/company/regiment etc. have them? Or did just some lucky guy get issued one when he left basic? :P

While the Waffen-ss had continually issued Camo uniforms since the beginning of the war; the Heer lagged behind. But by late 1944 the Heer had seen the light and was beginning to issue camo uniforms/clothing as fast the supply services could send them out.

But, how commonplace where these camo-uniforms? And how were they issued?

I would think the people closest to supply would get their camo first, then eventually to the front line units

and once we get into early 44, Camo becomes more and more common

I would disagree totally. Camo uniforms were reserved for front line combat units. Any photos of camo uniforms are from frontline fighting units, not rear echelon clerks and cooks. I think this applies equally to Heer, Luftwaffe or Waffen-SS units.

I would assume this is a photo of troops from SS-Regt. Deutschland since they had most of the camouflage smocks and helmet covers available at that time.

We all know of the Waffen-SS using Camoflauge, but I am referring to the Heer versions of it.

Any photos?

its says in that book, i will find it somewhere around all this chrismas stuff, that the Heer Generals laughed at the SS for wearing camo and the early SS men were known by the heer as "treefrogs" i dont think the heer started using camo en masse untill at least 41 or 42, winter camo was probly use 1st

Any info on the use of camouflage in the FJ?

I'm interested in seeing pics of Heer camo, anyone got them? Hmm, way, I might have something, I'll go check it ASAP!
