famous jews killed in gas chambers

Postby panzertruppe2001 on 15 Apr 2004 18:55

Somebody could inform me the names of famous jews (intellectuals, profesors, philosophers, etc) that were killed exclusevely in gas chambers (no firing, illness, tortures, etc)? I know that Anna Freud died in a KZ but i do not know in which circunstances.

Thanks

I don't know if this counts, but Franz Kafka's sisters died in the Holocaust.

Exactly Eistir, famous jews who died in GAS CHAMBERS. For example Anna Frank died by typhus. Her sister by starvation.
I do not know in which way died Anna Freud or Kafka sisters.

Thanks for all the answers

Hello,

Edith Stein (1891-1942), breslauer philosopher and christian nun died in Auschwitz or Gross Rosen in 1942, probably in gas chamber. She was of jewish descent and arrested by Gestapo (2 August 1942) although she was christian.

This is the sort of cautious, qualified statement that we need more of in this forum, and I applaud it.

We do not know exactly how Edith Stein died. All we know for certain is that she was arrested by the Gestapo and sent on a transport from the Netherlands with the destination Auschwitz.

We do not know whether she died at Auschwitz after arriving there, or was transferred to Groß Rosen and died there. If she died at Auschwitz, she could have died in the gas chamber, but if she was transferred to Groß Rosen, she could not have been gassed since there were no gas chambers at that camp.

The story of Edith Stein demonstrates the obscurity surrounding the fate of the majority of Jews who were deported in the direction of Auschwitz, despite the categorical statements one often sees. The most we can be sure of is that only a handful of them survived until the end of the war.

And therefore we must ask ourselves the question: How did the Germans manage to kill so many Jews in such a short period of time, what are the likely methods of killing ? So far gas chambers appear to have been the most "efficient" method of killing - so we assume that a big portion of the Jews dies this way that were sent to Treblinka and Auschwitz.

Trying to figure out if famous Jews were killed by gassing or by any other method seems quite pointless ? We can only make "qualified" guessing at most. As people who were sent to the gas chambers were often not entered into any log we can only do our research through deportation lists and they don´t give us much.
