Perhaps you should contact narwa44 an author in this forum. Narwa44 is Eddy de Bruyne, one of the top researchers on Walloon and Fleming volunteers of the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS

SS-Ustuf BDG

Postby herr on 31 May 2004 03:31

hiya

Ever heared of the Flemish Untersturmführer Bert Degruyter ?
I met the man in person a few years ago but he has passed away since.
He fought on the Russian front until he was pulled out and shipped to the SS school Tolz to teach new German SS NCO's about Nazi society and combat !
He was highly regarded and a very interesting and clever man !
I have his story in Flanders but not here In NZ.
PM me I hope I can arrange a copy of his story.

Regards

Hi Mikedc,

regarding Haupsturmfuhrer Henri Dericks, he was one of the professional military officers from the Belgian Army and a non-Rex walloon volunteer. He led the Walloon division (i don't think it can be called a division at this time) into one of the last counter attack at the Oder Front in 1945 (i believe it was the Kustrin bridgehead) before it was pulled out and retreated with Hasso von Manteuffel's 3rd Panzer Army into Schleswig-Holstein in North Germany..

Ostuf Charlemagne, my co-author is in contact with Fernand Kaisergruber, a walloon unterscharfuhrer veteran of the 28th Wallonie division. But he is very very old now and only his daughter replied to us by email

I think that SS-Hauptsturmführer Henri Derriks was the Kommandeur of the I./SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Regiment 69 and later the Kommandeur of Kampfgruppe Derriks

hi

I also have some pics of Remy Schrijnen, a famous Flemish volounteer (please note, there are no belgian volounteers .. its either walloon or Flemish) who knocked out 3 Russian tanks with his Pak while he was wounded.
I personnaly corresponded with him for a while and have signed photos of him and his knightscross. Unfortunatly I just realized they are all still in Flanders and will have to be sent to me here in NZ.

Also make a note of this man : Geurts, he was the first flemish volounteer to be awarded the EK 1st class for his actions but was killed soon after by stepping on a mine.
If I can get my scanner to work I will place a pic of him on a Flemish postcard of my personal collection.

I also have pics of Ustuf BDG when I met him a few years ago.

Tell me if interested

Regards

Are you also interested in collaboration in general ?

If so I have something else for you.

Breendonk fortress, between Antwerp and Brussels, the belgian HQ during the invasion but transformed into an assemble-camp by Schmitt, the SS camp commander after the invasion.

The first inmates were politic prisoners then came jews and thieves.
The German SS guards were pulled out and Flemish SS guards came in.
They were according to a prisoner even more brutal then the German SS ones.

Beatings and mistreatment was common for the prisoners most of whom were waiting to put on the train to Auschwitz or other concentrationcamps.

Some were shot, some were hanged, some tortured to death.

The prisoners had to dig the fortress out of the sand, then dig a moat, then cross it daily to transport tonnes and tonnes of earth from the fortress to the other side.

The doctor didnt have any decent medicines so some died of easy to cure diseases.

The fortress is open for public to view and is remarkable to visit.
Been there quite a few times and keeps amazing you.

Regards

Julius “Juul” Geurts

AKA the white biest

He was born in a flamish nationalist family at Waterschei on 24th of february 1923.
Juul was the fourth of 7 children.
His parents ran a mill in East Flanders.
When Germany conquered Flanders he soon felt connected to the black brigade (Dietse Brigade) “Diets from Dietsland stands for the idea of Flemish and Dutch nationalists to form one new state in the German empire called Dietsland. So the Dietsmen had their own political party and supplied men for the Flemish SS legion”
On 6th of August 1941 he is one of the first ones to volounteer for the Flemish Legion.
Hij was put in the 2nd company , Breymann’s famous unit.
He received the EK II on 20th of march 1942 as a runner for the compagniechef.
Juul was a simple, down to earth kinda guy who didn’t brag and just followed orders.
You could trust him doing his job and Raymond Tollenaere knew that aswell when Juul was his Zugmelder.

On the 2nd of july 1942 he was considered for the EK I and Sturmabzeichen and he received it in a ceremony on the 5th of july 1942 at Raglitza. This was the HQ of the 18th army where General-Oberst Lindemann pinned Juul's EK I on his tunic.

Because of an accident, Juul would never see his Flanders again.
He stepped on a mine while covering German Pioniere Truppen who re-laid the mines earlier... .
His lasts words were : "I am thirsty .... it is over for me"

:D A Berkenkruis reader too, Dietsland is not only Flanders, herr, it's Flanders, Holland and French Flanders, the term 'Dietsland' might not be usted by the Germans, the Germans wonted Flanders and Holland to Stap in a Great Deutsch Reich not a Dietsch Rijk. There was no political party for Dietsland, Holland had the NSB (Nationaal Socialistische Beweging) and Flanders had the VNV (Vlaamsch Nationaal Verbond) but that was not good enough for Germany, and then the Germans made DeVlag (Deutsch - Vlämische arbeitsgemeinschaft) for Flanders.

Julius Geurts is Born in Waterschei, Genk, I live there :D I know soms family of Geurts.

yes berkenkruis reader I am.
Is his sister still alive ?
Thats whom I got the SS card from with Julius on it.
DeVLag, who was more radical indeed, the two parties ended up being competition.

Mikedc, do you still want Geurts's pic ?
