SS General Anton Dunckern

Has anyone been able to document anything about the career of Anton Dunckern, apart from DAL listings? He seems truly to have been one of them that disappeared after the war.

After 1954 Dunckern was a lawyer in Munich (München). There he died on 09.12.1985.
For more info of his bio see my book "Die Generale der Waffen-SS und der Polizei" volume 1.

I thank you for the direction. Your book is behind my desk. Why I did not think to consult it? The reason why the archives had no record of him for me was my stupid error: Dunkern. Spelling.

out of the most complete bio of AnDie
I recommand yu in german the remarquable article :

Anton Dunckern by Dieter Wolfanger
in Jahrbuch dur westdeutsche Landesgeschichte issue 18/1992

Dunckern spent most of the war at Metz (my town) : appointqed as Befehlshaber der Sipo SD in 1940 he remained until june 44 then fall in disgrace. In sept 44 he came back succeding to Trummler last BdS Metz as SS und Polizeiführer Metz and in this capacity
Polizeiprasident Metz.
(Metz was then a front zone : the battle start on september and ended in november 44)

Jerome. I understand from the Dunckern bio that he was in the police early in the Saar? Do you have information on the structure of the political police in the Saar before 15.1.35 and shortly afterwards?

Hi Joe,

Dunckern was the first gestapo chief after the return of the Saarland to Germany. (sub title of Wolfanger article is "Der Erste Gestapochef in Saarland").
Date of official return of Saargebiete to Germany is march 1 1935
At the same period Willy Schmelcher was appointed Polizeiprasident Saarbrucken.

"Toni" Dunckern was appointed to set up network of Political police in Saarland as "mit der leitung stapolstelle Saarbrucken :
he created aussendienstellen at Merzig, Neunkirchen, Saarlouis and St Ingbert.
on 1936 he set up a stapo stelle at Neustadt a d W.
on 1937 he led in personalunion stapostelle Saarbrucken and Neustadt.

On 1938 Dunckern left Saar and was replaced by Otto Bradfisch (Neustadt) and Hans Ulrich Geschke (Saarbrucken)

Dunckern/Saar

Georges,

You have been most helpful with this info. A Walther PPK was discovered which has been associated with Dunckern by means of RSHA documentation from archives. The PPK is marked "ST. P. S. 1." and this marking has been a puzzelment to collectors for some time. Other PPKs with similar pistols have been observed. Learning of Dunckern's early association with the Saar, I have tried to figure a connection and I think you have provided a reasonable explanation. Staatspolizei Saar (waffen nummer) 1." belonging to the Chief of the Political Police in the Saar. It might also mean Saarbrucken, but one of the pistols is numbered 136 and that would be too many political police in that city. So the marking is for the entire province I believe. Thanks again.

Hi Georges,

according to my information there were only two BdS in France: Belgien/Nordfrankreich and Paris, but no BdS Metz.

And did I understand that correctly: Dunckern was SSPF and Polizeipräsident in Metz?

BdS Metz formed 9.7.40 under Dunckern to 30.6.44 then Otto Somann to 14.9.44 then Hans trummler to 16.12.44 when it was abolished. Remember Metz was taken back into Germany 1940. SSPF Metz formed 1.10.1944 under Dunckern to 18.11.1944

Ludger,

the BdS Metz was correctly the
Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD in Lothringen-Saarpfalz (ab 00.02.1941: Westmark), Metz

Thanks Phil and Oberstab for the explanation!!

Which was the superior HSSPF of the SSPF Metz?
Was SSPF Metz also abolished after 18.11.1944?

It was under HSSPF Frankreioch to 18.11.44 when it was abolished a New SSPF was formed for Ober-Elsass under Friedrich Sühr it came under HSSPF Südwest.

Phil,

that one of our favourite debate but I maintain :

Dunckern was appointed SSPF Metz on september 1944 : Zivilverwaltung Lothringen was in the befehlbereich of the HSSPF Rhein Westmark (WK XII) led by Jurgen Stroop.
There is no connexion between SSPF Metz Lothringen and SSPF Oberelsass which was in befehlbereich of HSSPF Sudwest (WK V)
these points are confirmed by Bettina Birn Die Hoheren SS u Polizeiführer.

Hi Oberstab,

according to my information there was an IdS Lothringen which was dissolved on 16.12.1944 and subordinated to IdS Wiesbaden:

Inspekteur der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD Lothringen-Westmark (Metz)
Juli 1940 – 30.06.1944 SS-Brif. u. GenMaj. d. Pol. Anton Dunckern
30.06. – 14.09.1944 SS-Staf. Otto Somann
14.09. – 16.12.1944 SS-Oberf. Hans Trummler

Ludger
