Hungarian Navy (river forces) of WW2?
Hungarian Navy (river forces) of WW2?
What the Hungarian Navy did during WW2? As I understand it consisted mostly of some armored river-gunboats. Am I correct? Where and how and when were these ships used?

Mait.

Hi Mait,
Do you know Marcus' site about this topic?
http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/axis-hu-navy.htm
I can offer you about the Hungarian River Forces this book:
Csonkaréti, Károly, Benczúr, László
Haditengerészek és Folyamörök a Dunán
Zrínyi Kiadó, Budapest, 1992
After the First World War, the main forces of the K. und K. River Flottila were shared between Rumania and Serbia (for example: the most powerful monitors were all confiscated). Hungary had just Gun Boats (former K. und K. ships) and smaller floating units. New expansion was the PM 1 and the AM serie (the PM had Turán tank turrets; the AM's were minelayers).
Sorry, but I am very lazy to write a lot
You should see Csonkaréti's book...

Oh, I've found, that Marcus' list is not too exact about this Gun Boat's weaponry.
The main artillery was in two turrets. It had one-one guns, but this guns wasn't 80 mm guns. They were 8 cm guns, it was the Hungarian name, but the exact caliber was 76,5 mm.
The Gyõr had different main weapons: it had two 80 mm Bofors AA guns in his turrets.
The auxiliary weaponry were very varied, and it was changed a lot.
In 1945 all Gun Boats had at least one 40 mm Bofors AA gun or one 20 mmm Vierling, they had 20 mm Solothurn heavy guns, etc...

Basically the WWI and WWII river monitors were the direct descendants of the Civil War era monitors, and built for the same purposes.Zachary wrote:Forgive my ignorance but when you say Monitor, do they have any sort of resemblence to the one used during the American Civil War?
A monitor can be considered more or less a "river battleship", if the comparison is not overstretched

I found a few photos of PM-1 and Debrechen on this site
http://www.haditechnika.hu/Archivum/199404/940409.htm
Can anyone give a brief summary of this action in English?
These pictures answer the question on the PAM pictured earlier- it is different than the PM-1. Can anyone share a picture of the PAM showing the whole boat with dimensions?
