Greece & the Corinth Canal 1941

With the rapid advance of German troops into Greece, the British were looking to block the Corinth canal with a blockship, but this was opposed by the Greeks. With no joint action agreed, the British went it alone and a explosive device (8 Depth Charges & a magnetic mine) was planted with a 7 day time delay, within the canal. It was reported that this device exploded on May 1st or 2nd sinking a ship. By may 10th the canal was opened by Italian engineers.

Question 1: Why were the Greeks against the Blockship idea?

Question 2: What ship if any was sunk by the time-delayed device

Question 3: What Italian engineer unit(s) were involved in clearing the canal, and why wern't they German?
