LSSAH at Leningrad?

#1

Post by Bjørn from Norway » 30 Oct 2004, 16:40

Hello!
I have searched without results, and hereby ask: was there a fifth batallion of LSSAH at the Leningrad sector in March 1942??? I always believed that all LSSAH units were in the Southern sector?

Hi Björn,

Yes, V./LSSAH fought on the Leningrad Front. The battalion was raised in Berlin in mid December 1941 mainly from various LSSAH convalescents. It's first Kdr. was Ernst Meyer, who was succeeded by Hugo Kraas prior to the battalion's departure to the Eastern Front in late February 1942. Like SS-IR4 and Freikorps Danmark, V./LSSAH was also flown to the front by transport airplanes. The battalion was composed from 3 inf., 1 MG and 1 heavy company. (Lehmann R.: Die Leibstandarte II)

cheers

Yes there was 5th battalion.

It was activated 16.12.41.It was send near Leningrad 22.2.42 and it stayed there to 10.5.42.

It had companies from 1 to 5 and from 21.2.42 Hstuf.Hugo Kraas was CO.After that,V battalion joined the main body of LSSAH in South and it was renamed as IV battalion with the 16th -to 20th companies.

Hope this helps

Hello!
Yes brothers, this does help quite a lot.
Members of the norwegian Legion, that I know, have stated several times that the Legion did replace the "LAH" upon arrival. Some weeks ago, one of the vets said it was the 5th Btl. So he did remember right!

Thank you both!
