Notice also in that photo of Cameroon that the reservists and Landwehr are wearing eagles on their tropical helmets. I wonder if these were the same as on the native soldiers fez? They look similar.

Three men, who conducted the war in the air in DSWA 1914/15

Oberleutnant von Scheele with Aviatik P-14 and Leutnant Paul Fiedler with LFG Roland.
Some missions also were flown by Willy Trück. Trück was a pilot and engineer of
the airplane manufacturer Aviatik, sent to DSWA to test local flying conditions.
Probably he and von Scheele alternately used von Scheele's Aviatik. Trück had his own Aviatik. but
the military commanders informed him that he would not get any petrol. So he had only the gallons he
had brought from Germany, only sufficient for few missions. His plane was always transferred by train to its new base, in the end
it was burned at Tsumeb.
Fiedler crashed in April 1915 and von Scheele in May 1915, ending the German air war in DSWA.

Oberleutnant z.S. Wendling, captain of the small German government steamer "Nachtigal".
September 17, 1914, Wendling rammed the British gunboat HMS Dwarf in the estuary of
the Cameroon River.
I have no further information about him.

Detzner seems to have been a kind of measurement-specialist in the army.

In 1912 there were 2 "measurement-expedtions" in Cameroon to locate the new borders after the Marocco-Treaty. Detzner(at this time Oberleutnant) was member of the German-British "Vermarkungsexpedition Jola-Crossfluss" Oct.1912 - April.1913.

In NG, Detzner was member of another "measerement-expedition" - this time to find the borders in the south of Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land to British-NG. During this, the first world war startet...

Any further biographical information available about Detzner? What became of him after he recanted his story?

Do you know something about Rittmeister Carl von Klewitz and Oberleutnant Georg Mayer (Deutsch-Neuguinea)?

Hello Gregorus,

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for that question. I didn't know Carl was von Klewitz's first name, so thank you for that.

All the information I have on these two is that they were regular army officers on secondment to New Guinea. Mayer was from the Königliches Bayerisches Schweres Reiter Regt. Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este Nr.2. and replaced Oberleutnant Prey sometime in 1914. Prey was from the 3. Posensches Infanterie-Regt. Nr.58 and had been in New Guinea since 1911 (although Baumann lists this as 1906- does anyone know the correct date?). Von Klewitz was also sent out in 1914, he was from the Dragoner-Regt. Königin Olga (1. Württembergisches) Nr.25. This information was supplied to me by Bruce Swanton, another of our members.

Does anyone else know any more about these men, or have a photo of any of them?
