During the WWs Rijeka was cut in half between Italy (Fiume) and Yugoslavia/Croatia/ (Sušak). Harbour and shipyards of Rijeka served the "Habsburg" fleet as well as later Italian.

In 1945 German 97th Corps mounted the defensive line north and east of Rijeka and managed to stall the attack of 4th JA Army, so the garrison had to be outflanked by landings on the western coast of Istrian peninsula. One part of 97th Corps remained encircled in Rijeka and later tried to push towards Ljubljana, but the Partisans encirled it and the Corps commander gen. Kuebler ordered surrender.

These are some pics of Rijeka fortifications built during 1930s and 1940s.
