Georg,
It wasn't meant as a criticism. Photos of von Mackensen exist already on the forum...I just couldn't see the point of posting another photo when Phil was asking for specific award details.
Max.

Well, it is a nice photo in any case, but always good to see it properly credited. On a side note regarding said institution, if anyone ever wants to use their photos in a publication, don't bother unless you have wealth on a par with that of the Almighty. Cost to use ONE (1) black & white photo in a book, based on a print run of 1,000- 67 euros!!! A terrible shame.

But I think it´s better if I publish it here....

Hello Max,

I am sorry I am in a terrible mood. Much because that our offices of our Gov. in Sweden have turned down our request for help to our youngest daughter, who suffers of Authism. Now I have to go through appeals of different courts, with the help of an layer. But what I really feel is that I will get my axe and make a "clear house" at the office who denied help to her.

So I beg for forgivness, being so tense at the moment.

Best regards,

Georg

What is the SS-Brif and Gruf promotion date for von Mackensen? And maybe the list of his awards (I couldn't found it anywhere)? Thank you in advance...

“Mackensen was the typical old-line diplomat, serving as the messenger of the regime at home and having little apparent effect upon the policies either of Germany or Italy. The real decisions were made by Hitler and Mussolini, and Mackensen was one of the ceremonial attendants and rapporteurs of the preparations for them and their aftermaths. It is apparent that he did not fully grasp the divisions in Italian politics under Mussolini nor the Italian resentment at German domination. Mussolini's major cabinet change the ‘changing of the guard’ in 1943, caught him by surprise, and the development of the anti-Mussolini movement in the months that followed found him failing to provide his government with adequate warnings. Although Roberto Farinacci conveyed to him some of the proposed plans of the conspirators against Mussolini on July 21, 1943, Mackensen concluded incorrectly that they planned only a reinvigoration of the war effort." (Philip V. Cannistraro, ed., Historical Dictionary of Fascist Italy)

Postwar Confinement:
In French captivity, 00.05.1945-00.06.1946. Prior to his death, it was planned that he would be called as a witness by the U.S. Military Tribunal, Nürnberg (in the “Wilhelmstrasse Case”) concerning German-Italian relations and the German occupation of Czechoslovakia.
