Today on the Nat.Geographic Chanel @1 PM and again on April 13... a rare program highlighting the Salerno landings... they hint at finding "something" in the coastal waters off Salerno...how much you want to bet its a Sherman DD.
Looks like a good program....should be interesting...

Couldn't be a Sherman DD since none of those were built until something like half a year afer Salerno, and it was a British, not an American design, IIRC. I'm not sure what that leaves though. Was it some kind of naval vessel, or something carried as cargo and intended to be used on land?

Don't leave us in suspense, man, what was it????!!!!!!

DD Tank

#3

Post by WOLF1 » 04 Mar 2005, 19:10

I heard from friends on another forum that whatched the show...what they found was a M4 Sherman DD tank off the coast of Salerno. It was determed that the tank was not part of the inital invasion..but used for training by the 36th Div. for the invasion of S. France. in 44. The US Navy helped recover the tank whick sadly had the remains of the crew inside. The tank ( now restored) is now in a Museum in Italy by the Bay of Salerno comemarating the Libaration of Italy by US & Briish forces.

Cheers
