It was a disciplinary batallion more commonly called The Battalion of the Officers. Privates until colonel could be sent in this batallion if they did a serious fault. If his control during the battle was exemplary he could reconquer his grade and medals.
This batallion was very efficient and was used to clog the breaches everywhere on the front from 1942 to 1945 (last battle was Berlin).

Is not the same as the SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500/600? As far as I know, in the beginning this bataillon was a disciplinary unit...

According to Tessin this are the SS units with the number 500:

SS-Fallschirmj.Btl. 500
SS-Jäger.Btl. 500
s.SS-Art.Abt.500
SS-Beobachtungs.Abt.500
SS-Führungs-Nachr.Rgt.500
SS-Wehrgeologen-Abt.500
SS-Zahnärztliche Abt.500

No mentioning of any others or penar battalions.

What's your source for this?? Sounds more like myth than fact to me.

Hello!
A good thread is found here: http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10599
It also gives a good explanation of this "Bewährungs" unit.

Ingo Petersen was the pen name of Frithjof-Elmo Porsch. There are some who regard his writings to be works of fantasy just like his claim to be the recipient of high awards such as the Knights Cross. No documents have been found to substantiate the claims of Porsch.
