112 Sqn flew Kittyhawk Mk I's and IA's between December 1941 and October 1942, flying mostly bomber escort missions but also some fighter bomber missions of its own against enemy armour. They flew from many different bases in Egypt and Libya throughout this time in support of the famous Eighth Army.

Gian,

Here is what the book Fighters over the Desert by Shores and Ring has to say regarding October 2, 1942.

Eight Bf 109s of III/JG 27 provided top cover for Ju 87s taking off at 0830 hours. The Messerschmitts met two formations of Allied fighters, the first of twenty-five, which from Uffz. Krainik claimed one victory, the second of eight. Uffz. Rohrlack claiming one.

Ten Kittyhawks of 3 RAAF Squadron and six from 112 Squadron were scrambled at 0850 hours over Alamein, seeing over twenty aircraft at 20,000 feet to the south. A lone Bf 109 was seen approaching from the west, and this was attacked and shoot down by Fl.Lt. Plinston of 3 RAAF. At 1010 hours, as the Kittyhawks were landing, four more of 112 Squadron's aircraft took off on a practice flight. Sgt. Rae's aircraft suddenly burst into flames and crashed killing the pilot.

At 1145 hours two Spitfires of 92 Squadron flown by Lt. Rabie and FO Hill were scrambled to intercept a reconnaissance Ju 88, which they chased out to sea, hitting it repeatedly, until it crashed.

In the afternoon sixteen Bf 109s of III/JG 27 again provided escourt to Ju 87s, reporting a combat with forty fighter, during which Lts. Schroer and Schöfböck and Fw, Gruber each claimed one victory.

112 and 3 RAAF Squadrons were again scrambled to intercept this formation, six aircraft of 112 Squadron and 12 of 3 RAAF Squadron took off and met the German formation south of Deir el Dhib. 112 Squadron saw seven aircraft, and were attacked by two sets of Bf 109s. one of which Sgt. MacAuley shot down, the pilot bailing out; FO Crichton claimed a damaged. Sgt. Neill of 3 RAAF Squadron also cliamed a probable. The aircraft may well have been MC 202s as on this day Captain Livio Ceccotti and Ten Ezio Bevilacque of 4o Stormo were both shot down.

112 Squadron scrambled five more Kittyhawks at 1725 hours and attacked four Bf 109 'Jabo's" bombing in the El Maghra area. Capt. Saville shor down two of the "Jabos". Lt Walter Burger of III/ZG 1 was killed.

A few minuted later six Spitfires from 601 Squadron scrambled over the Alamein area, meeting forteen Bf 109s and MC 202s. F.Sgt. Shea claimed a Bf 109, but Sgt. Allen-Rowlandson's aircrafdt was hit, and he crash landed at base due to the damage.

On this day I/JG 27 buried Hpt. Marseille.

That covers the actions foir October 2, 1942.

Hope this data helps,

Best regards,

Ron Klages
