This is without doubt one of the best sites on Finnish uniforms, military gear and weapons:

I am sorry to say there isn't any site about them. I am in process of gathering information to add information about soft vehicles used by Finnish military during WW2 to my website, but its a very long process.

During Winter War (October 1939 - March 1940) Finnish military had no jeep-like vehicles - the closest equivalent were various civilian passenger cars pressed to military use. The trucks which Finnish military used were a really mixed bunch, Finnish Armed Forces owned relatively small number of truck before the war so large number of civilian trucks were taken from their owners and pressed to military use. The most common truck in Finland was Ford, while Chevrolet, Volvo and Sisu were also very common.

Are you familiar with this website:

http://www.geocities.com/taipaleenjoki/

Check also this page:
http://www.winterwar.com/Tactics/FINtactics.htm

You can find reasonably good maps of the peninsula from here:
http://www.metsapirtti.net/kylat/taipale/taipale1.htm

Likely these are from the same 1:20000 military maps that I have. If you are interested I also have photo-copies of original Finnish 1:20000 military maps of Taipale peninsula and nearby areas. These maps were made in 1930's, so they are as accurate as one can get. I also gathered information about locations of Finnish concrete bunkers in the sector, let me know if you are interested about those.

Thanks for mentioning my uniform article Harri, I appreciate that and am really flattered that Finn nationals would consider it done well enough to be used as a reference online. That means a lot to me.

For what it's worth, I'm glad that there is more information coming out in English about Finland and her wars. I'm glad to see that so many Finns are creating websites describing and illustrating this period.

I wonder if maybe you guys ought to collaborate? There's a lot of information available. If you worked together, maybe you could all put up different bits? I mean, if three people post detailed information about, say, Jäger regiments, that's a duplication of effort. But if those three people split the focus between Jägers, cavalry, and artillery, then there's that much more information available.

Believe me, I'm not trying to complain. There are some really good sites with Finnish information. I've hit most of them! I'm just thinking objectively here for a moment.

What do you think?

Well many of us do work together. JTV has done articles for Mosin Nagant Dot Net and also helped on Kevos Four Dot Com. He also takes parts in http://www.gunboards.com and is a moderator on the boards at http://www.estonianarms.com . Vic and I are assisting him on some grenade photos that he will add on his site. Sami (Winter War Dot Com) and I have also done some smaller works together in regards to Finnish history (re-enacting and the like). In fact when I first started out Sami was one of the first Finns to assist me online. Sami, Vic, JTV, and I also saw each other just a couple of months ago while Vic and I were in Finland. We even went to a gunshow together – which was a lot of fun. Marshall of Kevos 4 and I just did an interview of the producer of the Fire And Ice documentary (Winter War). There is also a group of us working for the FinnFest event this August in Michigan, with Vic being a featured displayer at the event with me assisting him. I am also adding some items with the Kevos Four re-enactors display at FinnFest. Harri also takes part in the New Nordic Wars boards at Estonian Arms Dot Com (yes I know an odd spot for such a board but such is life – smile) There are other Finns that use this board that cross over to the sites mentioned above.

So there is some work that is done together but on the other hand we all have some different interests and these do not always go hand in hand. The good thing is that we all know each other and are there to assist each other if there is a need. It is sometimes hard to always work hand in hand as everyone has their own ideas and ways of doing things. Heck it is hard enough for Vic and I to always work together on Mosin Nagant Dot Net and Gunboards.com (ha). There is also the ever important free time question as there never are enough hours in the day. One reason that I am here at almost 3am is that I was finishing up some work in regards to the interview mentioned above. It is hard to work together when everyone has their own life and time constraints.

We all do have links to each others work in place and refer people to each other’s site. Maybe it would not be a bad idea for the forum board owner here to do a sticky type topic listing all these sites, as it would give a good overview of what is out there. None of us really compete with each other and the main goal is to spread-share info. So it should work out for everyone. I am also so glad to see so many Finns spreading this information, as that is just outstanding. It is their history and as an American I understand this. That is one reason why I was a bit worried in taking over the Nordic Wars Forum, since it had been run by Europeans. I did not wish to make it seem as if that was now "an American site". It is great that sites like Sami’s, JTV’s, and Harri’s are out there for us to enjoy. Everytime I visit them I learn something new.
