Hungarian Army in the Don Basin

Postby greg higdon on 30 May 2005 16:56

Does anyone know it the Hungarian Army that was involved in the Battles in the Don Basin were supplied with the German Mark IVF-1 and if so what were the divisional markings?

You should wait a bit and you'll see a book about that

BTW the 30. tank regiment's symbol was a mace.

Greg,
I posted a reply on 'another site' to your question.
Unfortunatley I'm at work so can not post any images from here, however to get you started.......

Regimental Insignia
The 30. Harckocsiezred (30th Tank Regiment) regimental insignia consisted of a white outline rhomboid inclined to the right with a solid white mace within leaning in the direction of the rhomboid.
Contained within the rhomboid is a differing number of solid white ‘circle(s)’ indicating the battalion number, one circle upper left corner is the 1st Battalion, 2 circles, upper left and lower right corners 2nd battalion. Provision was made for the expected 3rd battalion, this had circles in the upper and lower left corners and in the lower right corner, this 3rd battalion was not constituted due to insufficient vehicles.

One particular vehicle 1H-853 shows the regimental insignia without the ‘circles’, this probably indicates a regimental HQ vehicle, as only 22 were supplied, 2 vehicles may have been held in reserve or as command vehicles giving a total of 10 vehicles per company.
Occasionally on some vehicles a number appears below this symbol indicating the company number, this is not seen on all vehicles, the regimental symbol is not present on all vehicles within the regiment.
One anomaly that existed to this marking is vehicle No. 1H-843 a Pz.Kpfw IV F1 which shows the symbol reversed, the other five vehicles within the photograph do not carry the marking, it was applied by an over enthusiastic crewman incorrectly i.e. reversed.

Turret codes.
This is tentative (T-38 ) at present.....

30./I (30. Harckocsiezred I. zászlóalj)

HQ 301, 302
1st (Med) platoon 303, 304, 305 (T-38 )
2nd platoon 311, 312, 313, 314
3rd platoon 321, 322, 323, 324

30./II (30. Harckocsiezred II. zászlóalj)

HQ 601, 602
1st (Med) platoon 603, 604, 605 (T-38 )
2nd platoon 611, 612, 613, 614
3rd platoon 621, 622, 623, 624

All carried the 1941 National Cross marking (White, Red, Green cross) implemented with decree No. 440.348/eln. of 1941 on the hull sides, as 1942 progressed they are seen covered in mud, equipment etc to hide them.
All turret codes in white outline (stencil) both solid and broken outlines. There are decals available for this type of font.

As soon as I get home I will post up some photo's, this will be later in the week however.

Regards
Andrew

If you don't have checked the "Disable Smilies in this post" (or changed it in your profile) the forum converts for example T-38) into T-3Image.

The insignia on the Pz IV F1 was the national colours at Don river 1942-43.
