Hello Ron,

your lists are great, thank you.

Some questions on Tiger II´s:

You count delivery(08.44) of 16 Tiger II for SS101/501, is that a typo ?

Hartmut

Hartmut,

It is correct. The 1. Kompanie left Normandy and arrived in Paderborn on 9 July 1944 to begin training on the Tiger II.

They returned to the west departing Paderborn on 18 August 1944 arriving in late August and were to lose 11 of the Tiger IIs prior to 1 September 1944.

Best regards,

Ron Klages

Thank you Ron,

I think I made myself not clear enough, I am aware of the history of SS101/501.

I meant the number of " 16 " Tigers for 1.Kompanie in August 44. 16 is 2 Tigers more as the strength of a sPzAbt. Komp.(14).

Tiger list 1./101/501 Aug.44

105 104

111 112 113 114

121 122 123 124

131 132 133 134
(14 Tigers)

Does 1./101/501 had overstrength on August 44 in France?

As you count 11(actually has to be 13/Schneider counts 13) Tigers were lost in France and 1(Salomon) made it back to Germany. That 1 was probably Tiger #105 was used later at Schloss Holte as a training Tiger for 1./501 and had his last fight near Bielefeld.

Regards

Hartmut

BTW...From photos we saw of FKL 316 Tigers it seems they had more then 5 Porsches:

A question about the listed "Panzergruppe Paderborn" , could this unit be identical with the "Panzerausbildungsverband Westfalen" ?

Ron

This is an amazing piece of research and you deserve much appreciation for sharing it. I am, however, a little uncertain about what the statistics describe - I hope you can clarify for me - maybe I'm being dense today. The figures - are these the total number of vehicles in whatever state (operational, short-term repair, long-term repair etc) held by the unit described? Also you use the terms "January", "February" - are you talking about the strength figures for the 1st of the month, or the end or some specified date - have I missed this infm in the accompanying posts?

Could I mention several statistics that perplex me. The figures for Tiger and Tiger II for January 1945 show zero for both. Yet 6 Pz Army had both IIs and a few Is for the Ardennes counter-offensive Is your figure relating to 31st Jan, by which time 6 Pz Army had left? Also, am I correct in thinking that you exclude vehicles in schools training centrs etc unless these are mobilised into a combat unit (say in last weeks fo war?)

These amazing stats will be all the more impressive with some clarification.

How sad that Ron died some years ago as I would have liked to have asked him what the source was for his information. I have no reason whatsoever to suspect its accuracy but in order to use it authoritatively it would be really useful to know its source. Can anyone help? Many thanks John R.
