If you can get hold of "Waffen-SS Commanders" by Mark C. Yerger (2 volumes) then that will give you all the information you require. If not, then let me know and I'll pass all the information on to you.

Gille will be in the first volume of my Leaders of the SS & German Police series (R. J. Bender Publishing), to release later this year. His bio also appears in the already-printed Die Generale der Waffen-SS und Polizei, Band I (Biblio-Verlag), coauthored by my fellow moderators Andreas Schulz and Dr. Dieter Zinke.

Best,
~ Mike

Was Gille by any chance the most decorated Waffen-SS general?

Gille was the most highly-decorated member of the Waffen-SS. Although "Sepp" Dietrich also received the Brillanten zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes, Gille got the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, placing him at Nr. 1.

As a start (though somehow late) take a look at these sites:

Is it true, that Gille received Bandenkampfabzeichen for his actions during battle of Kowel in 1944?

Hi Klemen!

If you don't mind me asking, what's your source. AFAIK battle for Kovel wasn't a Bandenkampfeinsatz.

While in the clinic he was involved in some arguments with the medical staff that led Himmler and Wolff becoming involved.

Interestingly he proved highly susceptible to pain. The doctors discovered this when they tried to manually clean him out without anaesthetic. He also alludes to this in his diary when he links the fear of wounding, suffered during the First World War, and fear of capture by the Soviets in December 1941. He requested a fial of poison from an SS doctor.

He returned to duty in May 1942 but continued to receive regular medicals. He suffered a mysterious second bought of Haemorrhoid-itus during his command of the defence of Kovel and was flown out having been replaced by Gille. Upon examination he was found to have nothing wrong with him and in compensation for his timely escape Gille got the laurels and Himmler gave him the Bandenkampfabzeichen.

The next time it ‘nearly’ flared up again was during the Warsaw Uprising when the various diseases in the air commented upon by Heinz Reinefarth. The nervous exhaustion story was wrapped up in the many lies and half-truths B-Z gave out at Nuremberg.
