Beute-Flugzeuge (captured aircraft)

#1

Post by Trommelfeuer » 19 Jul 2005, 23:21

Luftarchiv offers many photos of american, british, french, italian, dutch, polish and chezh aircraft in the service of the Luftwaffe.
( Just click on Beuteflugzeuge.)

Let's share some (less known) photos of captured aircraft in Luftwaffe service... :)
If you have extra infos, please let us know !

for example...Dewoitine D-520

...according to Luftarchiv, the Dewoitines were used to train fighter pilots and in 1943 combat missions were flown against allied bombers in these planes...Italy and Bulgaria used these planes too, bulgarian pilots liked the Devoitine's agility and good dive abilities...but how many D-520s did Italy / Bulgaria have ?
How succesful were they ?

...according to Airventure (where I found the photos), after the allied invasion of North Afrika, 265 Devoitine D-520s were taken over by the Luftwaffe. JG 101 in Pau, JG 103 in Zeltweg and JG 105 in Chartres were equipped completly / partly with this machine. Does anyone have some information of their combat history ?

Alright, found some more info...
After seizing non-occupied part of France in November 1942, Germans captured 246 Dewoitine D.520C1 fighters, but only 182 of them were airworthy. Repainted and reequipped (i.e. German R/T FuG 7 and FuG 7a) served in Luftwaffe for operational training. There were used in three units: JG 101 in Nancy (later at Pau-Nord) in France, JG 103 in Zeltweg in Austria (later in Brussels area) and JG 105 in Paris-Le Bourget and in Chartres. Dewoitine fighters were used for combat and operational training after primary training on Ar 96. Some of German captured planes were sold to German Allies, some destroyed during France Campaign in 1944 or recaptured by Free French pilots and French Resistance. Last known were used in September 1944 by JG 103 in Brussels area.
source: Foreign Built Aircraft captured and used by the Luftwaffe on the Luftwaffe Resource Center.
The site offers good information of the use of the captured aircraft (...but no info how successful they were...), for example the Beute-B-17s in Kampfgeschwader 200...have a look!

Here's a nice site showing lots of photos of Dewoitine 520s of JG101 and a Potez 63 in Pau + a captured B-17, the 'Flak-Dancer':

During the campaigns in Norway and France, the Luftwaffe captured an unknown number of Curtiss H75A fighters. At least six of these aircraft were sent directly to Rechlin for testing. Other Curtiss fighters were assigned to III./ JG 77, which, following the campaign in Norway, was based at Döberitz to protect the capital. The newly-formed 7. Staffel flew the Curtiss figters as operational aircraft in September and October 1940. Their value as combat aircraft was virtually nil, however, as the lack of ammunition belts for the aircarft's machine-guns prevented them from being armed. In early November 1940, therefore, the 7. Staffel reequipped with the Bf 109 E-7. After the failure of the experiment of using the aircraft as an operational type, a handful were transferred to the Replacement Training Fighter Gruppe in Merseburg and to JFS 1, a fighter tarining school based in Werneuchen. The bulk of the captured Curtiss fighters were to Finland in the second half of 1941...
...lack of ammunition belts... ?

Could someone please explain why JG 77 armores (or whoever) just didn't replace the original armament with german mgs / cannons and used them as fighters ?

Okay, the next ones are not in Luftwaffe service...but at least they are Beute-Flugzeuge. ;-)
Soviet pilot in the cockpit of Bf 109G-2/R-6 No. 13903, January 1943. Captured near Stalingrad and tested in the Soviet Union using the designation "Five-Pointer", this fighter seriously worried the Red Army Air Forces leadership due to its excellent flight capabilities.
Fw 190A-8 No. 682011 had a ventral rack and wing-mounted 30mm cannon. Air Forces Scientific Research Institute tests demonstrated that this aircraft presents a serious threat to our ground Forces and to Red Army Air Forces strike aircraft.

...you'll also find Do 217M, Fw 189A-2, Fw 190D-9, Не 111Н-6, He 162A-2, Me 163B, Me 410B-2 in russian,
...and He 177 A-5 in british service on this site...

Polikarpov Po-2/U-2and Polikarpov R-5, nicknamed "Nähmaschine" (sewing-machine) by the germans, 'cause of the annoying sound it made during night bombings.

Photos found in the Luftwaffe Experten Message Board. There are lots of Beuteflugzeug-photos there (often with good additional info)...but many threads seem to be damaged...maybe the whole board goes down the drain...anyway, here are the photos.

Night Witches from the 588th Night Bomber Regiment is an interesting read if you want to know more about the Po-2 in VVS service.

Three more fine photos from the Luftwaffe Experten Message Board ... :)

Both P 51s and the P-38 were assigned to Versuchsverband Ob.d.L (Versuchsverband Ob.d.L = Luftwaffe High Command Experimental Detachment ), dubbed "Wanderzirkus Rosarius".

Also quite interesting: The strange tale of the only USAAF pilot to desert to the germans.

There are also some nice photos of captured planes in the Aircraft of World War II Forum, among them this quite strange italian design, the Savoia Marchetti SM92. (...looks a bit like the Blohm und Voß BV 141...)

Very nice find Francis, thank you! Now we only need a photo with a Beute-WL-car in front of a Beute-Luftwaffe-aircraft. ;-)

Auseklis, thank you too for this excellent find! :D

Luftwaffe from Czech has quite a lot of photos of - guess what ? Czech aircraft in Luftwaffe service. :)
